Sumo's are here!!!!!!

Postby f1jim » Sun Jan 15, 2017 2:45 pm

The long awaited Sumo oranges are at Whole Foods. Other stores usually carry them. I just bought 8 of them. They are expensive at $3.99 a pound but they are sooooo good. Every year I treat myself to them for the month or so they are in stores. I think they best Satsumas, and just about every other orange I have tasted.
They look odd and mottled but taste like heaven. Try at least one before you die.

Since I live in a remote rural (bible-belt/redneck) area, and quite distant from the nearest Whole Foods store, when satsumas first became available recently I decided to give myself a xmas present and ordered a box from one of the holiday gift/mail order fruit companies. There may be some supermarkets closer than Whole Foods that will get in a limited supply at lower cost, but the gas I would burn chasing around to find them would likely wipe out any savings. Jim's post has now inspired me to order some more!

After a sample of one, I say: They are really good.
Easy to unwrap, deliciously juicy, yet not messy at all!

Thanks, Jim!

Honeybells

Postby landog » Mon Jan 16, 2017 8:20 pm

When my wife saw the Sumos, she said that they looked like Honeybells.

Ever have a Honeybell?

They do look mottled and even unattractive. I bought them thinking any orange that looks so homely must be delicious. I fell in love at first bite!

Jim, I am curious. What oranges look attractive to you, Navel, Valencia?

I haven't tried Honeybells. How do they taste differently from Sumos do?

I have never heard of Honeybells until the other day. But, I was curious, especially after trying the Sumos! So, I ordered some that should arrive sometime in February.

I'll let you know!
