Chicken Cordon Blues

Postby StarchHEFP » Sun Nov 06, 2016 5:55 pm

This song was sung by Dr. Dean Ornish at the Lifestyle Medicine 2016 conference, on stage with guitar. Here is the original:

Live, very spirited version from 1977:

Poor fellow died age 36 of leukemia. Remember the beans / brown rice / crunchy granola 1960-70's? Some ideas come back around because they're that good.

Dr. Dean Ornish's version:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hxwma1E0q8

This stuff is so weird that the cockroaches moved next door... Babe can you see that old dog, he's out on the street. He's got a big smile on his face because they let him eat meat!

Change is always hard in the beginning! Sounds like the Mrs. went plant-based :-D

When I first met you baby you fed me on chicken and wine
It was steak and potatoes and lobster and babe, I sure felt fine
But now all you give me is seaweed and alfalfa sprouts
And sunflower seeds and I got my doubts
Babe, you left me here with the chicken cordon bleus

My stomach's so empty and all I got is food for thought
And I've been sittin' here thinkin'
'Bout the twenty pounds of groceries we bought
We bought ten pounds of brown rice and five more of beans
And five pounds of Granola and you know what that means
I'm just a regular fella with the chicken cordon bleus

Now won't you to play me them fat licks?

I'm starved for affection and babe, I can't take no more
You know this stuff is so weird that the cockroaches moved next door
Babe, can you see that old dog, he's out in the street
He's got a big smile on his face 'cause they let him meat
And babe, I got the lemon and the chicken cordon bleus

Babe, I'm goin down to the bakery and I'm going to find me a jelly roll
And some cannoli, some French pastry
A chocolate Eclair don't sound too bad, how about some lasagna?
You know fat is where it's at, my shadow disappears

Never thought of Dean Ornish as the singer songwriter type. Maybe it's just my preference for Steve Goodman, but I like it better than some of the songs Dr. Barnard's group does.

It's a great song as I'd expect from John Prine's close friend. I always loved the story Arlo Guthrie tells about how Steve sold him on recording The City of New Orleans.

Thanks for posting it.

That's such a "nice" story:

The Chaos of Neal Barnard
Plant-based pioneer shares career in medicine and music
https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/brick-brick/201703/the-chaos-neal-barnard
Dr. Neal Barnard wrote:At the time, I was working at the psychiatric ward in GW Hospital. One patient had a serious eating disorder. She was allowed to go home on the weekend, but she’d have to come back in on Monday morning. So one Saturday night, I was in the dressing room at the 9:30 Club, getting ready to go on stage, and in walked my patient,” Barnard recalled. “She looked at me and couldn’t believe it. Here was her doctor at the 9:30 Club with a guitar. I said hi, but she just left. Monday morning I arrived at the hospital and one of the attending physicians grabbed me and said, ‘Neal, we have a serious problem…your patient is de-compensating rapidly, we need to start her on medication right away. She’s now hallucinating. She thinks she saw you performing at the 9:30 Club in a punk band.

Recently on the Rich Roll podcast he mentioned how that song by CarbonWorks was #17 on the American Top 40, which is super cool.

By the way, how the heck does Neil do it? Let me just run the PCRM and be an uber talented musician at the same time. What a human being!

The podcast featuring the good doctor is the one here: http://www.richroll.com/podcast/neal-barnard/

And in the music video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmaZcr6rabk when the cow starts crying is really emotionally wrenching. This isn't some fabricated thing either. Cows really are emotional creatures with emotions. And the cow jumping for joy upon being released into the pasture is powerful too.

That's a beautiful axe Neil is wielding!
Always had a soft spot for Les Paul"s.

I had a supervisor who was a fully credentialed actuary. He gave up his career at Milliman to start singing songs. I guess there are just people who have to check out the views from every mountain they see.

I think a lot of it has to do with risk tolerance. I was a fair hand with a guitar in high school and college and have thought about trying to write and post music, but I doubt I'd have the courage to face up to the critiques.

Like I said, there is a bit too much metal in the CarbonWorks stuff for my taste. But I trust there's no Aluminum. Maybe we should get an expert opinion from Gustavo.
