An older gentleman stopped by our campsite while we were outside working on some repairs this afternoon, asking about our Direct TV dish. I took the information my husband promised him over during my evening walk. We got to talking and he said he is interesting in going vegetarian. He doesn't seem to have a laptop, but has a smart phone. I told him I'd give him a list to get him started and that he was welcome to ask us any questions he had. I keep a draft in my e-mail folder titled Veg List, but it's been ages since I've updated it. I could use some thoughts, as I'm sure in my repairs addled brain I'm missing things. Thanks all.
As promised, the veg e-mail I've sent before. As I wrote this for someone with a permanent address, so some things may not apply, like library card............
Here's a list of names and sites to get you started. There are plenty more, including lots of cookbooks. There's an awful lot here, take your time, and whenever possible, use your library card first. You are more than welcome to contact us with any and all questions you might end up having, we will answer to the best of our ability. Okay, yeah, mostly me, but sometimes we, co-author... lol.
BTW, if you do a simple Google search on any of these people, gee whiz, the others come up as "People also searched for....." Hmmm, imagine that!
Barnard, Neal, MD. Neal is where we started. We both like his explanations, easy enough to understand by those without a science background, but not talking down to people either. If you are ever fortunate enough to go see him in person, he is a most engaging speaker. You will find his books listed on this website, which does have a serious animal rights bent. http://www.pcrm.org/
Campbell, T. Colin, PhD. Campbell is a researcher. To us, he is a dry read, but the information is valuable nonetheless. http://www.tcolincampbell.org/
Esselstyn, Caldwell, MD. Former Cleveland Clinic Foundation physician, who was given the worst of patients, those who did not qualify for their cardiac surgery programs. His patients kicked ass. http://www.heartattackproof.com/
Esselstyn, Rip. Austin, Texas firefighter, son of Caldwell. Reformed much of the fire department diet in Austin firehouses. Has lots of recipes that would probably appeal to men transitioning to plant based eating. http://engine2diet.com/
Greger, Michael, M.D. Vegan MD and lecturer, currently working for the Humane Society and hosting http://nutritionfacts.org/ "Nutrition Year in Review" is his yearly lecture at Vegetarian Summerfest http://www.vegetariansummerfest.org/ and not to be missed. His web site is http://www.drgreger.org/
McDougall, John, MD. I would recommend that you join the board. You can read without doing so, but if you join, the board keeps track of what you've read already so you can just go to the newest entry in any given thread. You need never participate if you don't care to do so. I have learned a great deal about how to take better care of me and mine. http://www.drmcdougall.com
Novick, Jeff, RD. Jeff is the dietitian on the board. We saw him at Vegetarian Summerfest several years ago. http://jeffnovick.com His calorie density lesson has been of great value to both of us. I can't find the original, probably on the blasted facebook thing, but you'll find it in the third entry down, by Katydid, science brain. http://www.drmcdougall.com/forums/viewt ... =1&t=28868
Ornish, Dean, MD. So so, not our favorite. http://www.pmri.org/dean_ornish.html
Robbins, John. His book The Food Revolution got us started. Interesting information on the American Dairy Council's influence on the American diet. Frightening actually. http://www.johnrobbins.info/
Voisin, Susan, blogger. http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/
PS..... John McDougall just recently released a new book, which we both read at Barnes & Noble, The Starch Solution. Good explanations.
