Pretzels on good list have Vitamin E added, Safe to eat?

Postby MimiB-01 » Wed Jul 01, 2015 3:39 pm

Hello,
We are new at this, 3.5 weeks in, really sticking to it with no animal products and no oils of any kind. We were desiring to have some kind of familiar snack, so selected pretzels from the good list. This brand of pretzels we bought is on the good list. Just studied the label again and we see it has Vitamin E (mixed tocopherols) added "to preserve freshness". Frustrating! It also says Total Fat = 0.
We hear that Vitamin E is bad.

What are your thoughts on this?

I wouldn't worry too much about it. A small point probably. But there could be other issues with regularly eating crackers, even if it's low salt and no added oil.

How much is there in it? If it's a tiny amount in relation to the RDI of vit. E, probably nothing to think about.

I agree that added vitamin E is not good. Water-soluble vitamins should be less of an issue with regards to supplementation (like B12).

Pretzels Vitamin E added (Tocopherols) safe? Here's more inf

So, my husband's researched this on line this morning and he found the following information.

Tocopherol (Vitamin E): Increases prostate cancer risk (From: Cancer.gov)

The product in question is Snyder's Sourdough Pretzel Nubs. Add there's no way to tell how much of this additive we are eating if we just want a handful of pretzels to snack on.

Snyder's Sourdough Hard Pretzels, also on the good list, does not show this additive on the label. Maybe they are safe.

I like sourdough but I avoid sourdough products made from refined flours like enriched flours. Maybe look for pretzels made from whole grain.
Sourdough whole grain pretzel :

This pretzel replaced oil with sesame seeds so has more fat :

Thanks for these pointers, colonyofcells. We will try one of the brands you suggested. :)
