Fasting - Dr. Klaper

Postby Skip » Sun Mar 29, 2015 7:05 am

Dr. Michael Klaper gives a hour lecture on fasting which is really informative. It costs $2.99 to rent at http://doctorklaper.com/videos/fasting/ and is well worth it in my opinion (I have no vested interest in selling it).

He says that a healthy person can do an unsupervised fast safely for 3 days (5 days as upper limit). This would be a water only fast for purposes of cleansing or detox (or improving your immune system).

Jami Delaney has an interesting interview with Dr. Klaper at http://jaimeladulaneymd.podbean.com/ Episode 24. Jami Delaney is a cardiologist who has recently began a WFPB diet and advocates it for his patients in many ways. Jami has great podcasts.

I have never water fasted for 3 days, but I'm thinking about trying it on my own. Have any of you tried a water only fast on your own?
How long did you fast for and what were your conclusion about it?

I've never felt the need for a full 3 day fast, but once a month I will fast from say, 6 pm Saturday to 6 am Monday. I have a number of allergies, and I find a brief water-only fast relieves inflammation build-up without drugs. :D

I did one considerably longer than the recommended but I am a health care practitioner, studied and read extensively first, and monitored my own vitals and blood chemistry.

I learned a lot about my body and my stubborn "last few pounds" as well as having double underlined experience in how important it is to eat "perfectly" for a long time after. Fasting makes your body much more responsive to excess calories i.e. putting on fat more readily, and also makes your g.i. tract a lot more sensitive.

Also, esp w/ longer or repeat fasting, lean tissue/muscle loss becomes a significant issue that must be monitored and then carefully rebuilt over time afterwards.

Definitely NOT something to "just do because..."

I've yet to have seen any reason to regard this as other than BS. E.g., which specific toxins are thus being removed? Here is more detailed skepticism.

Fasting is definitely great for surviving food scarcity altho I don't know if I need to practice or not.

I just started back fasting one day a week (no food, only water). I did this for many years many years ago! Food tastes esp. good the following day when you start eating again. I have never fasted for more than 24 hours and probably never will.
On 7/8/2013, I decided to change my diet to a "mostly" WFPB diet. I have always been somewhat lean and muscular due to being a lifelong exerciser. Change in diet due to feeling crummy all the time despite a healthy outward appearance. Image

I have the book Fasting and Eating for Health by Dr Fuhrman altho I am not sure if a book is really needed to just stop eating for a day or 2.

For food scarcity , you do not bc food is so abundant today. Most ppl in America eat too much food, not too little!

I am glad you enjoyed that piece of information. I had to check because with my poor
computer speakers I was not sure. Since you enjoyed knowing of one female heart doctor/
endurance athlete here is another one, this one on the west coast. She is vegan.

Some specific toxin that might be removed (it depends on which toxins you have due to your lifestyle) are preservatives, food colorings, food stablizers, yellow dye #3 etc. and other toxic chemicals you may have ingested. For example, toxins that might be removed are those in the drugs that you have been taking (and stop taking on the fast).

Water fasting is not some scam that is sold as your referenced article mentions motivations for various marketed cleansing products. The only cost is water! Some of the benefits of fasting include strengthening your immune system, reducing inflammation, resetting hormonal balances, resting your organs like your stomach, intestines, and liver. I don't consider this to be "BS"......

Did you see this video of Dr. McDougall with Dr. Goldhamer? http://www.vegsource.com/news/2014/06/d ... video.html It is interesting because Dr. McDougall shares the reason water fasting isn't promoted because there is no money in promoting water.

I've been a Natural Hygiene enthusiast since 1978 and since that time have water fasted many many times. Most times in the company of other fasters at retreat centers based around hygienic principles. Other times by myself for about that 3 to 5 day period where the fast does not go too deep.

It's hard to describe a need for such an exercise to anyone that doesn't have a curiously as to its usefulness. Weight loss would not fit the usefulness parameters IMO though I've met many who felt the need to use it for that. You have to have a good idea how live after a fast so you can maintain it's benefits. Not only is there a physical shift in function but a mental renewal takes place upon refeeding after a moderately lengthy fast, say a week or more.

Dr. Goldhamer is a great source for the scientific application of fasting. His center handles quite a number of unique cases where fasting is essential for their chance at recovery. Then there are the types like me that are healthy but enjoy the after effects so much they are willing to undergo some fasting every once in a while to tune up the body/mind in this manner.

If one can embrace the concept of fasting then they can enjoy the benefits it offers.
I forum here cause I have no where else to go.

My oldest brother (66) has now done three water fasts that exceeded 30 day each without supervision and several 10/15 day fasts. He learned what not to do during the first fast and especially after. His first week of the first fast was tough because he felt terrible by day 5. That was solved when he took a potassium supplement every couple of day. After the first 30 day fast he gained 40 pounds of weight within 45 days and most of it ended up in his belly instead of being distributed throughout the body. For the first time in his life he had what is called a beer belly. The muscle loss is substantial and weight (read fat) regain can be dramatic and very quick. It's important to start exercising ASAP after the fast and upping protein while minimizing fat in order to put back the muscle and return the body to a normal metabolic rate. He told me the scariest aspect was the blood sugar drops. The first week it stayed around 70, the second 60/65 and after the 3rd week it was 38 and stayed there for the balance of the fast. But he felt absolutely fine at this low level as long as he continued the potassium.

For those interest the following is a PDF of the years of pain and suffering a doctor endured while being treated by his fellow doctors AND his day by day experience of his water fast. My brother found it an extremely valuable resource and reread it many times during his fast. You'll also note the fast regain of weight that occurred after the fast at the center while eating a vegan diet of whole food, but including nuts.
