Potassium overdose caught on camera? 1 kilogram of peeled bananas gone in 66 seconds:

If someone overdoses on potassium supplements, has renal disease, is in diabetic ketoacidosis, is on certain medications including some NSAIDs, and maybe for some other reasons, it is true that he can get hyperkalemia which is very dangerous. But barring these sort of things, the normal kidney will excrete potassium if the levels get too high.

And where that "expert" got the idea that two only two bananas per day is the limit I do not know. For the average need of about 4700 mgs per day eight bananas and four oranges would do the trick. One's need also depends on the amount of sodium and magnesium in the diet.

The couple in the video made excellent, intelligent points. (And did it without resorting to Duriander's blue language.)

I guess the BBC considers a fruit fest in the park more dangerous than a girl scout cookie sale, a church ice cream social, or the sale of hot dogs, burgers, potato chips, nachos and cheese dip and baked goods my daughter's hospital had to raise money for the heart unit. Yes, you read that right.

I'm convinced that there's a concerted effort by various industries with aligning interests to trivialize all plant based diets. The idea is to make them look silly, irresponsible, and dangerous—and therefore not worth considering. By not allowing them a place in the community debate, they will never be a player in the food discussion landscape. After all, how many times do these ridiculous protein claims have to be debunked? Journalists are great at finding buried facts and yet they can't unearth this information? The answer has to be that they're not interested in the truth, only their agenda. And so, the average person goes around looking for more protein and moderation. :(

By any measure, the tactic is working fabulously! Just look at the comments of any NY Times food article and you'll see numerous comments on moderation, healthy fats, good protein sources, etc. This is coming from the supposedly educated segment of our English-speaking population. And I bet you the commentors have never heard of Dr. Mcdougall, and if they have, they think that he is some sort of new age quack. So sad.

That brought back some memories when I was really fond of watching those precious segments of 60 Minutes with Andy:

Deconstructing The Girl Scout Cookie

To skip the ad at the beginning, simply go here first:

Then copy and paste this link:

I read the labels and I liked the cookies better before I knew what was in them.

They all have partially hydrogenated vegetable oil.

I made a lot of cookies in my lifetime and we don't have a drop of partially hydrogenated vegetable oil in our kitchen. We don't have any lecithin or niacin either. The Girl Scouts put what they call "reduced iron" in them. How would a girl reduce iron?

The Cafe Cookies have caramel coloring in them. You shouldn't color a cookie.

They all have riboflavin.

I looked up cookies in my Fannie Farmer cookbook and Fannie Farmer doesn't use riboflavin.

Next time a Girl Scout tries to sell me cookies, I'm going to ask her about partially hydrogenated vegetable oil and about riboflavin.

I read a review of the program. Evidently in the program he debunks an all fruit diet, also debunks the paleo diet. I think in the end he meets a 113 year old man and concludes that the best diet includes, fish, fruit and vegetables. And lamb a couple of times a year.

The fish, veg and fruit diet (with lamb twice a year) might indeed bring health to lots of people but once again there is the old scientific truism---if a really really old person you know eats a certain way that is proof that it is the best diet for you.

The host turned out to have a major agenda and a half:
