People Passionate About Starches Are Healthy and Beautiful

My wife, Mary, and I were enjoying steamed sweet corn (vegan) tamales with a side dish of black beans served to us at a bayside table at Guaymas Mexican/Seafood restaurant in Tiburon, a small town located a few miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. At an inside table next to us sat three plump women, their short sleeves revealing upper arms almost as big as my thighs. They were elegantly dressed and from their speech I knew they were well educated. During the course of our meal I watched all three of them at various times hobble with painstaking efforts from their table to the restroom and back.

40% Off DVD Spring Sale - $29.95 for 2 DVDs Dr. McDougall's Money-Saving Medical Advice Dr. McDougall's Common Sense Nutrition

Dr. McDougall's Money-Saving Medical Advice
Information contained in this DVD will save your life and thousands of dollars spent on diet gimmicks, supplements, and the wrong doctors.

In this series of lectures Dr. McDougall explains why:
Starches Are Essential. The current epidemic of obesity grew as starches became vilified. Historically, as well as worldwide today, people living on diets of potatoes, rice, corn, and sweet potatoes have always been trim, strong, active, youthful, and healthy. For maximum weight loss a few more green and yellow vegetables are added. Be careful! Too little starch results in feelings of hunger, fatigue, and frustration.
Vitamin Supplements, Save One, Can Be Deadly. Vitamins and minerals are essential for our health when delivered in their natural plant packages. Once isolated and concentrated into pills they can cause nutritional imbalances, sickness, and death. Vitamin D is actually a hormone made in the body with sunlight. Unnatural living can result in Vitamin B12 deficiency—this is the only supplement I recommend.
Choosing the Right Doctor. Sick people see doctors; your goal is to stay out of the medical businesses by being healthy. The McDougall Diet and a healthy lifestyle will prevent and cure common diseases. Select a generalist as your doctor-advocate. Specialists should be hired to do special things, not general patient-care. A consumer must be well educated, prepared, and skeptical when dealing with doctors and hospitals.

Dr. McDougall's Common Sense Nutrition
In this series Dr. McDougall challenges commonly held nutrition beliefs, such as:
Plants Are Incomplete Proteins. Almost every dietitian, doctor, and respected organization teaches animal foods are necessary in order to get sufficient amino acids from proteins. They are wrong, and the science says so. Plant foods provide complete nutrition long before they reach the dinner table. Informed consumers will avoid all that fat, cholesterol, and contamination mixed up with animal protein by choosing delicious dishes made from “complete protein” foods like potatoes, rice, and/or beans.
Soy Makes People Sick. Soy foods are at the center of one of the most intense controversies in nutrition; some people say they are medicines and some say poisons. They can be both, but as traditional foods, like tofu and soy milk, they are delicious additions to a healthy meal plan. However, fake meats, synthetic estrogens, and baby formulas made from soybeans are toxic.
Fish Is Good for the Heart. The belief that fish is the most important food for a healthy heart has led to the destruction of our oceans. Plants provide the safer, cleaner, environmentally sensitive, and original source of omega-3 fats. The real tragedy is this slaughter of sea life has been senseless because consuming fish does the body much more harm than good.
Introduction to New McDougall Book The Starch Solution

This truth is simple and is, therefore, easy to explain. You must eat to live. But the choice of what you eat is yours. There is an individual, specific diet that best supports the health, function, and longevity of each and every animal. The proper diet for human beings is based on starches. The more rice, corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and beans you eat, the trimmer and healthier you will be—and with those same food choices you will help save the Planet Earth too.

My recommendation for eating starches puts glazed looks on people’s faces, and many dismiss me as certifiably crazy. They think of starch as something used in the laundry to stiffen shirts. Starch brings back memories of pasty bland-tasting goop, and white, airy Wonder Bread. Most disturbing is that nearly everyone believes starches are fattening and nutritionally inferior foods. Fortunately, common knowledge is completely wrong and the proof is right before your own eyes.

Report from the February 20-22, 2009 Advanced Study Weekend

Over 160 people attended this biannual McDougall event in Santa Rosa, California. As always the enthusiasm, education, food, and friendship were over the top—far greater than anyone expected.

Standing in the presence of T. Colin Campbell, PhD is almost a religious experience. He got thundering ovations for his nutritional words of wisdom. Neil Nedley, MD gave two outstanding presentations, including information about his 10-day live-in program that treats depression with a 90% success rate. Pam Popper, PhD surprised and excited the audience with her experiences with the politics of nutrition and information on school lunch programs. Doug Lisle, PhD, Jeff Novick, RD, and John McDougall, MD provided their usual high quality entertaining information for the attendees.

The Multiple Sclerosis and Diet Saga

People often ask me: Why are you spending $750,000 from the McDougall Research and Education Foundation to study the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS) with your diet? Why not carry out research on a more common problem, like obesity, heart disease, or diabetes?

Most people can’t even pronounce “multiple sclerosis”—so they just call it MS. It is likely you don’t personally know anyone with this disease; after all, only 350,000 people in the United States and one million worldwide have it. You may have heard of it because a few famous people have made their disease public, like: lead anchor on Fox News Channel Neil Cavuto, former Mouseketeer Annette Funicello, singer Lena Horne, comedian Richard Pryor, and talk show host Montel Williams. Only 10,000 new cases are diagnosed in the United States annually, compared to half a million new major cancers and 1.25 million fresh heart attacks. So why pick MS?

For me, stopping multiple sclerosis with the cost-free, side-effect-free McDougall Diet is equivalent to throwing the biggest rock I can find at the biggest picture window in town. The shatter will be heard around the world. If diet can effectively treat a disease as mysterious and deadly as MS, then diet has to be a medical miracle—and could easily be capable of bringing to an end diseases long accepted as due to diet, like type-2 diabetes, heart disease, and common cancers. A simple cure for MS would startle even the most unconscious medical doctors into awakening. Plus, I owe this study, and much more, to my mentor Roy Swank, MD for his friendship, guidance, and pioneering work.

A Personal Profile

by Jeff Novick, Registered Dietitian at the McDougall Program

I have been interested in food and fitness for as long as I can remember. Some of my earliest childhood memories involve helping my grandmother prepare food from scratch, and learning about wrestling from my grandfather. As a child my two favorite TV shows were Jack LaLanne and The Galloping Gourmet with Graham Kerr. When I was in grade school, I petitioned my school to let me become the first male to take Home Economics instead of Industrial Arts (or “Shop” as it was called). I wanted to learn about food and cooking, not metal and woodworking. Sports, specifically gymnastics, wrestling, and soccer were also my interests.

The Fat Vegan

You may consider this title an oxymoron—a figure of speech that combines two normally contradictory terms, but in real life this concurrence is all too common. You may also think the title is offensive. My intention is to help, not to provoke anger. People who have declared themselves “vegan,” have said “no” to eating all animal-derived foods. At extraordinary personal costs, many of these guardians labor tirelessly to protect the welfare of all animals. Fat vegans, however, have failed one important animal: themselves. Furthermore, their audiences of meat-eaters and animal-abusers may be so distracted by their appearance that they cannot hear the vital issues of animal rights and the environment; resulting in an unacknowledged setback for a fat vegan’s hard work for change.

Study Published in New England Journal of Medicine
Expands the Indications for Statins—and the Public Suffers
Today’s (November 10, 2008) front page headlines worldwide announced a simple test called “highly sensitive C-reactive protein” (HS-CRP) and the most powerful cholesterol-lowering statin currently on the market, Crestor (rosuvastatin), used together, could cut the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and death from cardiovascular disease in half.1 For the casual reader, Crestor appears to be a miracle treatment with few risks and reasonable costs. Today’s publication adds to the belief of a growing number of experts that “statins are so wonderful that they should be added to our drinking water” (like fluoride).

The First Imaginary Conversation between President-Elect Barack Obama and His Newly Appointed Surgeon General, John McDougall, MD

Obama: Welcome to the job. I want to be clear that I have appointed you because I need someone who has new ideas that will inspire change. My one fear is that Congress will not confirm your appointment because many of the members represent interests of the food and drug industries - and you are well known to be a strong critic of both.
McDougall: I voted for you because I believe you are, foremost, interested in the welfare of people, not only Americans, but everybody. Being intelligent, articulate, and appearing unafraid also helped sway my vote.
The US Department of Health and Human Services says, “The Surgeon General serves as America's chief health educator by providing Americans the best scientific information available on how to improve their health and reduce the risk of illness and injury.” With two notable exceptions, which I will talk to you about later, the Surgeon General’s office has failed the American public. I am a general doctor; you should expect my interests to be solely focused on the welfare of people, not industry.

McDougall Breaking News Bill Clinton’s Madness: A Consequence of Heart-Bypass Surgery Brain Damage

We Need to Understand and Show Some Compassion
One of the savviest politicians of our generation, known for his wit, charm, and calm under extreme pressure, Bill Clinton appears out of character in the speeches and interviews televised since his bypass surgery September 6, 2004—and his mental deterioration may be accelerating. Remember, this is the president who withstood public impeachment before the entire world for his relationship with Monica Lewinski without once losing control. Now, he is easily angered by hecklers, and makes factual mistakes and racial slurs while aggressively defending his wife’s campaign for presidency. Everyone sees his mental and emotional decline, yet to date, no medical professionals have spoken out about the cause or offered help.
"Learning to Love Myself Again"

I love candy, especially Skittles. Sometimes I would even fall asleep with a mouthful of them. In the morning I would look in the mirror and hate the obese person I saw, yet I never connected the two. So, I stopped looking in the mirror, thinking that if I didn't see the problem it wasn't really there. This was in 2005. I was 30 years old, stood five-foot-eight, and weighed 245 pounds.

Finally, the path to permanent weight-loss
I began struggling with weight-gain after giving birth to my two children: I was 29 years old, stood 5'4", and weighed 165 pounds. In the early eighties I went through a divorce and other emotionally challenging periods and started eating as a way to comfort myself. In a matter of just a couple of years, I was 100 pounds overweight. I was now 37 and weighed 235 pounds.

McDougall Adventure News

Here's Why You Do Not Want to Miss the July 2008 Adventure Trip to Costa Rica
We enjoyed so much about the trip: the wonderful new friends we made; the chance to meet you both and learn more about nutrition and health; the daily adventures; the delightful and knowledgeable guides, who went out of their way to inform and accommodate all guests; the plentiful, scrumptious food; and the breathtakingly beautiful setting overlooking the Pacific Ocean. McDougall Adventures provided an awesome vacation and handled all details professionally, from greeting arriving guests at the airport to returning us there and making sure we were all in the right line for departing visitors, and everything in between.
This is without doubt the best vacation we have ever had.
Warmest regards,
