I was looking for something yesterday to give to my son who has to be off dairy that would be rich that he could use in hot cocoa. I came upon the So Delicious Coconut Creamer and was surprised to see it had no calories from fat and no cholesterol in it. I know as a general rule, coconut is a no-no, but as this is fat free and has no cholestrol in it, do you think it would be OK for McDougalling? I would LOVE to use it from time to time to make some Tai and Indian dishes that call for coconut milk!!!!!

My opinion only....If you want to use it go ahead, just don't go crazy with it...if your in losing mode, just keep an eye on it, you don't want it to stall your weight loss...personally, I like almond milk, and I have used it in curry dishes with good results, I also use a soy creamer from time to time in my tea.

I'm so sceptical of product labelling. I'm pretty sure there is some kind of serving size loophole that they are getting around to show this as a fat-free product. It has coconut cream in it, how can there be no fat in the product?

Greentea, that is what I was thinking. I was thinking of writing to
the company and asking for an explanation of how they make that product fat free.

Potato head...I would LOVE to use almond milk. But
I have never seen it fat free! :(

I started buying almond milk after discovering that a cup of my almond milk is only 4% fat compared to the regular soy milk I was using that was 6% fat per cup.

If you want to lower the fat content further, you can add water to your milk. It takes me about two weeks to finish a carton of almond milk, and it's not something I buy on a regular basis, so I don't worry too much about the fat anymore.

Eppy - It looks to be around 50% fat. If the serving size has less than 1/2 gram of fat, they can round down to zero. (1 g of fat = 9 calories, so 1/2 g = 4.5 calories.)

Notice that total calories is 10 per Tb. But everything that provides calories (protein, fat, and carbohydrate) is zero except for the carbs. But there is only one gram of carb = 4 calories. Where are the other 6 coming from? Mostly fat, probably half a gram so they can say zero. That's roughly 50% fat.

To confirm, always read the ingredient list. Typically, the tip off is some sort of oil. In this case, there isn't, but it's hard to believe that the coconut cream isn't contributing fat. So, I looked up the nutritional profile of the coconut cream. Sure enough, almost 100% fat. In the creamer, it's diluted down but stil this is not a fat free product.

I would highly recommend Jeff's DVD on label reading.

This product looks to me like it would be a good alternative for coconut milk.

Per the USDA National Nutrient Database, 1 tablespoon of raw coconut milk has 34 calories and 3.58 grams of fat.

Per the label of So Delicious Coconut Creamer, 1 tablespoon of the creamer has 10 calories and 0 grams of fat.

There are 16 tablespoons in US measuring cup. So if you used 1 cup of fresh raw coconut milk it would add 57.28 grams of fat and 544 calories to your recipe. If you used 1 cup of So Delicious Coconut Creamer it would add 160 calories and it appears it would add zero grams of fat. But I understand that if there is less than .5 grams of fat per serving manufactures are allowed to round down to zero on their labeling which can be misleading if you typically use multiple servings. But worst case scenario, if this product actually has .4999 grams of fat per tablespoon, one cup of this product would have 8 grams of fat which is significantly less than the 57 grams you find in raw or canned coconut milk.

Letha was right. Here was my response from the company.

"Thank you for your email regarding our products. The reason that the creamer shows 0 fat per serving is because the fat content is less than 1/2 of a percent therefore it is rounded down to 0."

That sounds sneaky to me!!!!!! :\

So now I ask, how do you find out if the calories from fat is less than 10% of total calories? My math stinks.

Yeah I'd guess it has 15 to 16 grams of fat per container. 32 servings at almost .5 gram each. They brag about how it has all these chains of fatty acids and then display no fat. Despicable company.... = liars and cheats. I won't buy anything from them any more.

I like oatmilk - probably available across the water too - if not this company then some brand. It has to be shaken before use and if making tea I leave the spoon in the cup and stir before each slurp to distribute it evenly ..

The cream is lovely but have only used it once in four months - at Christmas

I use one half of a measured tablespoon of the creamer in a large mug of coffee each morning.

You need two numbers: calories per serving and calories from fat per serving.

Of course, if the numbers provided on the nutritional label are questionable, all bets are off. On the nutritional label Letha showed for the product, it says calories/serving 10, calories from fat/serving 0. We know the 0 isn't quite accurate, so the best we can do is to estimate.

But suppose you had a product where the numbers can be trusted. Support cal/srv = 150 and cff/srv = 14. Is that above or below 10%?

Knock the last digit off the big number. That's a quick way of approximating 10%. So 10% of 150 will be about 15. 14 cff is just under 10%.

its likely 45 to 50% fat. 9 calories for a gram of fat, and this probably has .45 to .499 (they used 32 servings to get that fat free labeling so its probably close) so 4.5 to 4.999 of those 10 calories per serving are fat.
