Hi there Garbanzo

This is really cool, and I would love to also report starting on thurs, which of course means that I have to do something tomarrow, since this week has been very slow work out wise with three sick kids. Anyway, my question for you is, how are you planning on raising awareness for the benefits of Mcd'ing? I mean I understand the logics of walking across the US, but will there be media involved or just us here on this site? I would for one love to see this whole thing on my local news as there in the past have been ppl who have walked across the US to lose weight ect. and it was broadcast. I cant wait to see pictures either.

Deb

Hi Debbie,
With so many worthy causes and good people working to raise money/awareness about those causes, it appears that traditional media attention is becoming harder to generate. More and more advocates are now using the new media of blogs and social networking to educate people and create buzz. I’ll be handing out small business size cards with Dr. McDougall’s website address to people I met along the trail. Combined with the discussion on this forum and a little old fashioned word of mouth, I hope I can do my part to spread the good news about low fat plant based diets. :)

Hi Garbanzo! I hope you're enjoying Cape Henlopen, and I hope you brought some insect repellent -- those biting flies can be a menace! I hope you get to see some dolphins, too, and some plovers. They nest on the beach in the spring, but the season should be over now. Once I saw an osprey at Cape Henlopen -- he dove toward the water, grabbed a fish in his talons, and flew away!

A meal out of 660 Curries sounds great. I have a cabbage and a cauliflower in the fridge right now, waiting to be made into curry. I also have some homemade mango chutney I canned over the weekend.

Hi Toadfood,
I’m so impressed that you are canning mango chutney. Love that stuff. Are you posting the recipe somewhere?

Hi Garbanzo,
I like your idea of road food. I’ve been wanting to try the sourdough wasa crackers. I think they would travel pretty well – if you didn’t crush them.
I’ll have some exercise to report tomorrow – although not as much as I’d like. I’ll be back in the morning.

I'll post my miles tomorrow, but wanted to tell about my hike yesterday, since it was part of "America" and on a "trail" LOL

I live in Northern Utah, with the Wasatch Mtns just east of me and there are foothill trails all along the mountain range. http://img4.sunset.com/i/2002/03/ogden-wasatch-range-m.jpg
There are trailheads at the eastern ends of many streets, so it's a quick drive up the hill, park the car, and head out.

Yesterday I went to the 29th street trailhead, and started marching. My trek soon took me to a trail a little bit higher on the hillside, and just a wee bit more "climby" than I thought it would be, but it was perfect! My heart rate got up without killing me, the sun was just rising, so it was nice and cool, and the air was clean. A fantastic view of the city was mine in many different places. (didn't have my camera though, darn it) Quite beautiful!

Because it's been a cool summer here, there was still lots of green everywhere, and several wildflower patches along my route. I saw asters and chicory, sage, cactus, sunflowers! they were adorable! and lots of scrub oak.

There were three or four bridges over brooks. Normally by this time of year, these little cricks are dry but not this time. Just sweet babbling water flowing over brown rocks. I asked God to take a blessing down into the city with the water :) A few sumac trees along the side had just begun to change. Sumac is so pretty in the fall, with brilliant flame colored leaves. In another couple of weeks, I'm going back to that trail.

At one point, near the beginning of my walk, I heard a repeated rustling in a thicket of shrubs across the way. If I could have gotten over there, I may have peeked in to see what it was. Probably birds. there were orioles fluttering around, and a couple of them were in and out of that thicket. I also saw a brilliant blue jay, and of course there were sparrows and chickadees hopping in the branches. Saw some robins, too. It's fall, so everyone's active. Getting buffed up either for their flight south, or just packing on the pounds to get through winter.

I started at 29th street and went south, until I came to the Water Towers, which are at 36th street. There I saw a wondrous sign!

the sign said "Strong's Canyon" and "Waterfall Trailhead" lol made ya look! hee hee

but that is where the waterfall hike begins...it's 1.5 miles straight up the mountain side, so I'm getting in better shape before I try it.

yes, a very nice hike. About two miles of up and down, that took me about an hour.

today I will stroll in my own neighborhood, quite genteel-ly and decorously. Too bad I don't have a parasol and a yorkie on a leash.

hahahaha

sorry...ehem...just sharing some of my own walking here, on the walking thread!

blessings, Heidi

Based on the messages posted in this thread, it appears that the group has a strong preference for reporting the distance they walk in miles instead of minutes. So, we’re going to revise the rules.

You can now share your completed exercise using either of these methods.

1. Report the miles you have walked and I will walk an equivalent number of miles.

OR

2. Report the minutes you have exercised, and I will walk one mile for every 10 minutes of exercise reported.

I’m anxious to get moving down the trail. Thank you Hamster for giving me a big push off the starting line. :)

Hi Garbanzo - I can't wait to see the miles and minutes that you get tomorrow. This is so exciting. Also, I was very interested in the new ideas on light shoes. When my friend and I did parts of the Appalachian Trail, we were told by every source to get very heavy boots. It was really hard to get used to them, and they were expensive! I'm so glad that the "rules" have changed. That was when I was turning 50, and my friend was turning 40, so about 13 years ago. We worked so hard to get everything else ultra light, though. We spent months planning for everything! I hope that you are ready, because we will give you so many miles that you will really be getting tired! Take care, LauraA

Since I will not be up early on thursdays, I will be posting my minutes every wednesday night. I started on monday and have exercised a total of 210 minutes so far. Have fun walking 21 miles ;)
From walking my local trails the past 3 days, plus my indoor exercising on my Gazelle and Exercise bike. I just wonder how long that intense soreness is going to last from my knees down to my ankles.
I will have much more next week. :D (and hopefully less sore legs!)

Good morning Garbanzo!

I am reporting for four people: me (TeriTX), my DH (Bruce), my 13yo DS (John) and my sister (JuJuBee, who will be posting on her own soon). We started counting on Sunday.

JuJuBee did 360 minutes on her own (walking and stationary bike riding).

The rest of us did 360 minutes together total (daily evening walk).

So, altogether we're contributing 720 minutes.

Bon voyage!

Hi everyone! I'm excited about how far Garbanzo is going to walk!

Letha, I think you're doing great. All the experts I've ever read say to start with 5 minutes of walking, and that's what you did. It sounds like you've found some beautiful places to walk, too.

The mango chutney recipe is from the Ball Complete Book of Home Canning. It's very easy and good -- and you wouldn't actually have to can it, if you ate it all up right away (might want to halve the recipe in that case). I think it would keep for 3 weeks in the refrigerator. I'll post the recipe in the Recipes section soon.

Here's my exercise minutes and miles -- I see that Letha, my role model, started counting on Friday, so that's what I'll do too.

I walked 3 miles, and did 100 minutes of aerobics -- so that's a total of 13 miles for you, Garbanzo! My goal is 270 minutes per week (that's 45 minutes a day for 6 days), so I hope to get there next week!

I only managed to get 40 minutes in but next week will be better!

Fall is upon us and this makes me smile. :)
