I have a question for gluten sensitive people that also go to Christian churches. What do you do about receiving communion? I'm conflicted. Gluten makes my joints hurt but I usually don't intestinal symptoms. It will hit me a couple of days later.

Our church has allergy-free stations (I think they use rice paper wafers). I bet unless you're in a really small church, that you're not the only one. You can always ask!

Our church also serves a gluten-free host upon request.

If you're a regular, just call the the church secretary some weekday morning to find out whom you should notify. If you are there first one, they may need a couple of weeks to obtain a suitable gluten-free host.

If you only get there occasionally, I'd do that and also remind aside the priest or chalice bearers before each service you attend.

I too would bet you are not the first person with this need, even if you might be the first person to speak up. If you do happen to be the first to make the request, it's an opportunity for the church to provide better for its members, and your priest will likely be delighted to let the congregation know about the availability of a gluten-free host for anyone who needs it.
