This is my first time posting here, and my first question is --
What does Dr. McDougall say about the current recommendations by some of including "good" fats in the diet. Olive oil, etc. Because it is supposed to raise HDL levels in the body.

As far as I know Dr. McD still says no added fats, whatsoever. Does he think the studies are wrong, that "good" fats increase HDL therefore are beneficial? Or that any positives are outweighed by the negatives.

If this is already answered somewhere on this site, I would appreciate someone directing me to it.

Thanks.

Thanks very much, Rich. I skimmed the article but did not read it thoroughly yet.

I don't know when it was written, but the studies cited are mostly 10 or more years old. All before 2000. Has Dr. McD commented on this recently?

McD does not "allow" added fats into the his diet....oils are liquid fat. Yes, they may raise HDL levels but lowering overall cholesterol is the goal (and the healthiest) so raising HDL levels is counterproductive to lowering overall cholesterol levels.

Use water, applesauce or pumpkin mash as a subsitute depending on what it's intended use.

If you look at the drmcdougall.com web site itself, you can find lots of information. I did some research for you, but there is no reason you can't do this for yourself the next time you have a question ;-)

http://drmcdougall.com/med_hot_vegetableoils.html

provides a list of articles relevant to the subject. However, the listing is a bit dated. If you look at the newsletter article list, you will see there are also articles of interest on this subject in the August '06 and October '06 newsletters. The August '06 article may be what you are looking for, if you are thinking of the recent study proclaiming that the "Mediterranean diet" was better than a "low fat" diet.

I've been examining those recent studies for years as I've been McDougalling and they NEVER compare use of "healthy fat" to following anything close to a McDougall diet, but rather the Standard American Diet or something very close to it. 30% fat, with no attempt to avoid the particularly bad fats, is usually what researchers consider "low fat" -- and isn't that far from the SAD to begin with. "Healthy fat" to cause higher HDL is what people need to take the bad cholesterol out of their body from eating what they shouldn't be eating.

You may want to look through the newsletter article list. There are probably other articles you will want to read.

Yes, that was the sort of thing I was thinking about. Also recent studies concerning what raises HDL and lowers LDL Etc. I was looking for recent comments on recent studies. I am not so impressed with relying on 20-25 year old studies.

I won't be so lazy next time, and will try to do the research myself. I'm not familiar yet with this new site. I quit going to Vegsource as it took forever for the pages to load with my dial-up. Glad there is this new site.
