I agree that we should stay away from politics (yes, I know I posted a few things - in my defense I didn't start the thread and I think I stayed relatively objective) but if we're going to censor political references, we should also censor religious ones. They're all over the place on these boards and some people find them just as inappropriate as others find political or sexual references.
I'm like you, I left VegSource years ago because of the constant bickering and attacks - some political, others diet-related (the F vs McD especially). Argh!!! VegSource is a much larger community and moreover, attracts a lot of people for whom the ethics and morality of vegetarianism is the key factor. I think this lends itself to more emotionally-based (rather than intellectually-based) arguments that get out of hand because at the end of the day, you can't prove morality or ethics and at some point it's just a "because I believe this" scenario.
Once you start censoring, where do you stop? I trust that the people on this board stay on topic 99% of the time and don't let the brief forays into more contentious territory go on too long or get too acrimonious. Let's not get into the equivalent of book burning and censorship as long as there's no genuine abuse.
