I stopped using VegSource years ago because of policitics. Politics does not belong on any of the McDougall Forums! Is there anyway you can censor them from appearing?

I agree that we should stay away from politics (yes, I know I posted a few things - in my defense I didn't start the thread and I think I stayed relatively objective) but if we're going to censor political references, we should also censor religious ones. They're all over the place on these boards and some people find them just as inappropriate as others find political or sexual references.

I'm like you, I left VegSource years ago because of the constant bickering and attacks - some political, others diet-related (the F vs McD especially). Argh!!! VegSource is a much larger community and moreover, attracts a lot of people for whom the ethics and morality of vegetarianism is the key factor. I think this lends itself to more emotionally-based (rather than intellectually-based) arguments that get out of hand because at the end of the day, you can't prove morality or ethics and at some point it's just a "because I believe this" scenario.

Once you start censoring, where do you stop? I trust that the people on this board stay on topic 99% of the time and don't let the brief forays into more contentious territory go on too long or get too acrimonious. Let's not get into the equivalent of book burning and censorship as long as there's no genuine abuse.

:)

"censor?" probably too charged a term...

but the purpose of the forums isn't served by contentious or divisive discussions about politics or religion.

Im not a big fan on censoring but I hate anything to do with politics so a separate area on the board where those who go on there choose to participate and keep it off the other boards.

I am also not a fan of censoring, but the past few days I have seen a few hate-filled diatribes. I don't even want to come here anymore. I believe that all mentions of religion, including the religious sayings at the bottom of some posters comments, and all mention of abortion be removed. We ALL have our own beliefs.

www.fatfreevegan.com has a discussion board that appears to be strictly low fat .

I am getting fed up with it as well. Focus should be on the lifestyle. All this talk about religion and politics is simply raising tempers and is accomplishing nothing positive from what I see. I am tempted to just stop coming here.

:-) Besides, you will never switch someone to your particular point of view regarding politics, ethics, or religion - worse than trying to convince someone to change to this diet! :-)

Oh I wouldn't say NEVER. Hillary Clinton was once a staunch Republican and Laura Bush was once a stunch Democrat. Their husbands changed their point of view. I also was once of the opposite political Party and my husband convinced me to change parties. While debate may seem troubling to some people, it is intellectually stimulating to others. The best way to avoid it is to just not read the political posts.

And same can happen with religion. Two sisters in my family (not my sisters) regretted their faintly Jewish/mostly nonreligious upbringing and promised themselves they would enthusiastically adopt the religion of the man they married - whatever religion that was. One married a Jewish man, the other a Catholic man, and they are very staunch in their observance of the tenets of each religion. :)

Yes, I find the Yes We Can threads highly offensive and inappropriate for a medical/nutrition based forum such as Dr. McDougall's website.

Nearly every topic has political implications, including, but not limited to the political implications of a low-fat vegan diet. You can't get away from it. It's part of life. Like it or not, everything and everyone is interrelated, so why pretend otherwise by not talking about it?
