Ok SUCCEED, I'm starting our thread for sticking to the program!! Anyone else who needs some extra support in going vegan...please join in! After having a bad week (and a bad lunch today) my family and I had the tex mex bean burgers and peas for dinner. YUMMY!! I'm going to make some goodies to take with me to my in-laws out in Missouri next week. I'm sure I'll have some slips next week but if I go prepared, I'll make it that much easier on myself. LET'S ROLL!!

This is an excellent time to start this thread. I was just about to start a thread entitled: Cheating and the Slippery Slope

A few weeks ago I was disappointed to find that my best efforts at keeping to the diet had led to only modest decreases in my total cholesterol. Since then I attended my son's wedding, with a couple of minor "feasts", and this has led me to think more seriously about adherence to the diet, especially with the holidays coming up.

My goal is to keep to the diet more closely. Here is what I consider "cheats" (for me!):

I went to my favorite Italian restaurant last night and had pasta pomodoro, requesting no cheese and no added oil. I don't have any reason to think they didn't follow my requests, but the sauce seemed too darn good, and I had no way to be sure that the chef didn't add oil as he was tossing the pasta. Also, it was white flour pasta. I also had a glass of red wine, which is a "cheat" until I get that cholesterol down.

Yesterday for lunch I had a hummus sandwich made on a white flour tortilla, since my rural grocery chain doesnt carry fat free tortillas. Only 1.5 grams of fat, but I COULD have used ff whole wheat pita, if I hadn't let myself run out!

So, I am attributing the cheats to: not having EASY access to the food I want, and, eating out.

I am convinced that these things add up, or at least, have added up for me, over time. So, I am trying to RADICALIZE myself, and put the effort in before my next cholesterol test, which is scheduled before the 10K walk I am doing December 2.

So, I am with ya here, we need to STICK TO IT!

We'll do it FIddler! Glad to have you here. Your slips aren't major, not in my book anyway. But I agree, I think sometimes its all those little things that do end up making a difference. I'm really trying to do MWL but I'm having a hard time giving up the bread. I'm definitley trying to limit it though. I had potatoes for breakfast today and a tex mex bean burger for lunch. Don't know what I'll do for dinner tonight...hubby won't be here so I might try a new dish that I know he wouldn't like anyway. Hope everyone is having a great day!!!

Hi,
It sounds like you are both on the right track. I on the other hand got up and starting eating SAD without even thinking. :o I did however go fork out some money to the local rec center so that I can start walking and working out on Monday. I just got back from the grocery store and was able to pick up a few staples. I'm going to try water for the rest of the day to try and clear my palate for tomorrow. I've been having such terrible salt cravings lately, I can't seem to get enough. Then once I have the salt, I need sweet, Yikes, help me please!

I'll check in tomorrow,
Kelly

Oh Kelly...I know all about that mindless eating. I do it while fixing stuff for the family, and before I even know it or realize it, I'm popping something into my mouth. It definitely happens.

I'm doing great this weekend, although I just ate some Doritos...but I put the bag down and stepped away slowly before anyone got hurt. LOL!! I started today, so my stomach feels like a bottomless pit. I'm going to make some potatoes here soon, they always fill me up. The other good thing going on today, I'm not going to have my usual 3 Bud Lights during my Bengals football game today. Why does beer go so well with football? Well, actually, the Bengals could drive me to drink this year!!  .....just kidding.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend. We have to brace ourselves for the week ahead. I've decided that I am going to allow myself some turkey with gravy on Thursday, but that is going to be my only feast food. We'll get thru these holidays together!!

LJ,

It sounds like you are doing great. We went to the movie today and I snatched some popcorn but not much. I really need to get in the mindset that I'm going to do this as I find myself actually "Forgetting" that I shouldn't just be putting any old thing in my mouth. I intend to get up at 5:30 tomorrow and get a walk in before work. It seems that when I workout, the healthy eating comes a bit easier.

Have a good evening and stay away from the Doritos!!

Kelly

I just got back from 10 days in Florida where I was working a booth at a big conference. It was terrible - we were working 14 hour days, couldn't leave the convention center, and there was NO McDougall-friendly food. All the food was pre-made so no way to ask for changes/substitutions. The best I could do was order a Chicken Caesar Wrap and pick out the chicken. There was no way to bring anything in either. Evening meals were easier, but I got so sick of eating out.

I got back home last night, but I leave again on Wednesday morning to visit family for the holiday. Only 2 days at home, not really much time to get myself back on track. And I'll be travelling and visiting and won't really have an opportunity to fix much of anything for myself to eat while I'm away again.

Well, I guess I just needed to vent a little - I'm just so frustrated. The timing for things has just been so bad lately. I'll just make the best choices I can over the next few days.

Just a reminder that the vegan part of it gets much easier with time :) .

I've been doing this for around a decade, and am just not really tempted by meats, eggs, cheese, ice cream, etc. I have been tempted by fish, but the last time I smelled it up close (I now let groundhubby cook some wild fish for himself in his own pan at home--relatively new compromise we struck :-) )--it seemed gross to me, so maybe I really don't miss that either :D .

But here at work I was loading paper inot our machines early this morning, and it was just me on one side of the room and the cleaning lady on the other...somone had left some PETA factory farm cruelty pamphlets lying around, and of course it was her job to throw them away...well, I could see she was aboslutely horrified looking through one of 'em...so I said, "Did you see that gruesome factory farm stuff they do to raise meat these days?" And she was like,"Oh it's horrible, I wish I didn't need to eat it." So, there's my chance  ..."Yeah, I quit with the meat about 15 years ago and then quit with the eggs and cheese and milk about 10 years ago...that's ONE of the reasons I'm glad I don't eat that stuff anymore...I don't have to feel like I'm paying people to be that cruel." I could tell it seemed impossible to her that I could go without for so long  ...well...she knows I'm "OLD," and all of that, and so she was sort of lookin' me up and down, and then blurted out--"THAT'S why you don't look your age and you're so skinny, and your SKIN...that's how come you've got such lovely skin!" Of course I think I look old and my skin looks YUCK  , so maybe the meat-eating has affected her eyesight more than my looks :-D , but it felt good to get a compliment regardless, so I soaked it all up real good there for a couple of seconds :P --we talked about how a cup of collard greens has more calcium than a glass of milk, about how the protein in meat makes your kidneys wear out, about how common cancer and heart disease has been here in our workplace, even among fairly younger folks, etc. I was GOOD, too...didn't preach at all :) ...just empathized with her desire to not partake in all of that animal cruelty by buying meats, eggs, cheese, etc., and chimed in about how much better it is for you to avoid it anyway. I had the feeling when we parted she might take it upon herself to do a little bit of research from there :) --groundhogg has mellowed with time...

But my point here in this post, the thing that was hitting home with me when we were having this discussion this morning, was how DIFFICULT it sounded to her, when, after 10 years, that part, staying vegan, sounds incredibly easy to me, when back 8 or 9 years ago it was tough for me to pass up cheese, ice cream, and especially chicken livers  , yes, I once LOVED chicken livers :o . I was thinkin' ;'bout that when I was telling here when I smell somebody heating up cheese in the lounge microwave just down from my office, it stinks really badly to me, just as if a nonsmoker smells a cigarette, it stinks, but to a smoker it smells delicious...same kinda thing.

So...again, my point is the vegan thing really DOES get easy after several months or a couple of years. the sugar, oil...those have been more persistent temptations with me than the vegan part...I mean, I don't really ever want ice cream...but give me some of the frozen vegan stuff (all has sugar and oil :( ) andthat's another story entirely  ...still waiting for that part to get easier!!!! STill, my only temptations are still within the vegan realm...so it's not like I'm drooling for EVERYTHING...but once I WAS.

ooops... am I rambling? Just tryin' to say you do lose your desire for meat, eggs, and diary products if you get away from them for long enough. :) Just try to hang on tight to that thought! :)

Wow, I HOPE it gets easier with time. I thought I had a sweet tooth, but after McDougalling for about 4 months now, I've discovered I really have a fat tooth.

Sugar has little appeal now that I'm eating McDougall style. I used to have sugar and creamer in my coffee, now I drink it black. Instead of the sugar cravings, I discovered that what I was actually craving was fat.

I used to be almost a vegetarian anyway, it was easy for me. Now that I'm lowfat vegan, I've discovered that it was fat that made everything taste better. That was probably my main problem all along, more so than the sugar. I mean, take a fat free cake. How good is it? It's just ok. Fat free cookies? Muffins? Toast with no butter? Pancakes? Add fat to these items, and it's a different story altogether.

Groundhog,

Thank you so much for this reminder. If I think back about 7 years ago when I was strict, I do remember you lose the cravings. I remember how good it felt not to wake up bloated and lethargic from the food I'd eaten the day before. I remember how good I felt, how nice my skin was etc. It's just getting over that hump of abstaining from the junk long enough to get it out of my system. I'm trying to do this at the worst time of year. We are going to the in laws for the holiday and all we ever do is sit, eat, sit and then eat some more. I'm absolutely dreading it. THere are sweets everywhere just out for the grabbing. I guess I've just got to decide I want this more than the temporary (very temporary) enjoyment sweets bring. I may print your email as a reminder.

This is a great thread. I am not eating meat or dairy. My gosh, CHEESE was the hardest to give up. It has taken years to get to the point that I don't crave it. Meat was easier to give up, actually! But I think my problem is what they called in a Weight Watchers meeting, "BLTs: Bites, Licks, and Tastes".

That little bit of creamer in coffee (when I do have coffee, am swapping out some days for tea)? That creamy salad dressing at the salad bar? The little bit of *flavoring* (fat) in the veggies when eating out?? Etc., etc. Doesn't look like "much" at the time, but those little amounts add up over entire day/week.

Well, I just have to chime in....after much soul searching I have come to the realization that I CANNOT "sort of" do anything....so the ony way this is going to work for me is to NEVER cheat. When I have one tiny slip up, it grows! I want this more than anything, so it will be all or nothing for me. I envy those that can slip up now and then and never notice.
My biggest problem is planning....that's my goal....to plan ahead! Good luck to us all!
