Ours is very old, so I don't remember very well. I think it only takes about 2 years. The first couple of years harvest tend to be meager, but the amount of fruit increases after a couple more seasons.

I made a spinach salad for lunch and put some sliced figs, diced apple, a small amount of pecans and some cooked whole wheat berries on a bed of fresh baby spinach. I added the whole wheat berries because I just finished reading The Starch Solution and thought to myself "I need some starch on this salad"! I had just cooked some wheat berries in a small crockpot that I own so I rinsed them to cool them down and added them to the salad. Very good! For the salad dressing, I used some bottled fat free poppy seed dressing. I would like to find something a little better for the dressing.

Speaking of the wheat berries, as a child my mother would sometimes cook the whole wheat berries in a crockpot over night and in the morning we'd have the wheat, a little honey and some milk as our hot cereal. I always loved it. It was reading the Starch Solution that brought back those memories and so after I ate the spinach salad, I served myself up a bowl of wheat berries, with a little honey and almond milk. I loved it!

I planted mine 2 years ago and this year I have 3 figs on one of the three trees I planted. I was told by the nursery to expect all of the trees to produce next spring.

Yesterday after reading all of the praises for fresh figs I decided to give them another try and have to say that I enjoyed them much more the second time around. There still is a bit of an unusual taste to them that I'm not sure I like.

This morning I cut a bunch of them up lengthwise, then coated them with maple syrup and baked them for about 20 minutes until the maple syrup started bubbling. Very good!

Plain raw fresh figs are delicious if they are perfectly ripe. Especially the green ones. They are pink inside, and very pretty if you cut them open and add to salads.

Mine are quite ripe and pink inside. The pinkness is a bit unsettling though as it seems kinda weird :D

I had them again for breakfast coated in maple and baked for a bit.

They do look a little like baby aliens, don't they.
