Bernard's plan is similar to the McDougall plan. It's not identical, but it's similar. Do you have The Starch Solution? While not specifically about diabetes it addresses it, and it's a wonderful book!

Trust me on this: One day you'll wake up and realize that it no longer feels like "being strict." It just feels GOOD. :)

Barnard's book is very good but he relies heavily on the glycemic index which more or less tells you to eliminate white potatoes. Most of us on this group lose weight and keep fasting blood sugars low enough while including potatoes. There are other starches he can eat if he wants.

I have not read the book but I wanted to add on to what didi said in that from my personal experience (I have reactive hypoglycemia so I've spent time tracking my sugars), I've found the glycemic index to be not entirely reliable.

I think it's helpful in some respects (ex. identifying how complex carbohydrates are much better than processed, refined carbs like white flour) but it has limitations. Like she said, potatoes are often eliminated based on the glycemic index but I've found they actually help keep my blood sugar stable, especially when paired with the right foods.

I don't think you could go wrong with either program. If I had Type 2 Diabetes, I would definately take a closer look into Dr. Bernard's program. (Even tho I love my taters!)
