Hello  Me again. Ok, so I was wondering if there was somewhere I could find some scientific facts about how the body digests these two sugars and how it is used and stored?? I remember Katydid saying the fruit sugar is digested in the liver and too much is turned into fat, but not really starch sugars??? And I am so appreciative of this info, but is there more out there??? I really would love to have this info in my possession for further discussions with my family or on other websites.
Ya know like overeating on fruit sugars vs overeating on starchy sugars. What exactly happens in the body??? Is there a book or website I could read about this!?!?!? Or does anyone truly know??? Cuz I would love to overeat on both! :unibrow: lol Actually, I think I already do :D

The following article by Dr. Lustig goes into all the gory details of the difference between the liver's metabolism of glucose (from starch), ethanol (from alcohol) and sucrose (from fruit juice):

While I don't have super solid studies I can point you to, I do know that there's a guy named Doug Graham that is a nutrition guru and he has people losing weight on a diet that is mostly fruit. He claims that as long as the fat intake is low, fructose is healthy and does not get stored as fat (unless your calories are extremely high). He does have a lot of people that are fans of his so, at least to some degree, his diet does seem to work. Personally, I prefer the Mcdougall approach more. Also, I can't attest to how successful the diet is other than that there are a good amount of loyal followers claiming benefits.

Anyway, if you want to know about what high levels of fructose does to the body, he may be an interesting person to investigate.

He has a book called 80/10/10.

Part of 7-part video The Skinny on Obesity: "Sickeningly Sweet" http://www.uctv.tv/skinny-on-obesity-sickeningly-sweet/

That's with Robert Lustig MD too. The next link is more a lecture by Lustig.

This too is worth a watch/listen to Sugar: The Bitter Truth: http://uctv.tv/search-details.aspx?showID=16717

scooterpie, thanks for those videos. i now understand why starch fills me and fruit/veg doesnt satisfy me. ghrelin hormone decreases in carbohydrate ingestion but not in fruit, protein or vegetable ingestion.

Scooterpie above recommended Dr. Lustig's Sugar: The Bitter Truth: http://uctv.tv/search-details.aspx?showID=16717

I found it to be an amazing and informative video. If you want the physiological explanation of how fructose is processed in the liver and the conversion of sugar to fat. Why complex carb and fruit are good and refined sugar and HFCS are so very bad. Watching this video made me a believer in really paying attention to the refined sugar in my diet. Yes fat will make you fat, but so will simple sugars and HFCS in a hurry.

Thank you Thank you alll so much!!!! :) Soooo helpful!! Yes I am actually from 801010 way~o~eating (Doug Graham) and although maybe I didn't really gain, I was slower weighed down and felt smooshier towards the end of a year eating that way. I just never got satisfied either... But with these starches I am satisfied and lost weight. Which was strange to me cause my cals are the same just mainly from starches instead of fruit.... :duh:
I was commenting on 30bad about this, but I didn't have enough info to back it up... Maybe I can post those vids??? I don't wanna be argumentative, but I do want to help the gals who are gaining (water or fat gaining.) It seems to happen to girls more than boys, but that's probably cuz our metabolisms are slower, or we are shorter, or we move a lil less than guys, or are better at storing fat and water?lol
I keep thinking and wondering, I know it's just my silly mind I'm sure... but if fruit sugar kinda digests like alcohol, and that's why they are super skinny too , like alcoholics?? Not in a bad way, golly I sound horrible and judgmental don't I. But there are also some gals on there too that say they live on exercise and alcohol and are skinny minis... And all the peeps I know that drink a lot exclusively are skinny...Does the liver get damaged by the fruit sugar the same as alcohol effects it??? I need to thoroughly read and watch those vids, but I have my family...and 8 kiddos in all running round so it kinda hard :\

80/10/10 works for athletes because they mainly convert the ingested fructose to pyruvate and burn it off for energy whereas sedentary people are more likely to convert large amounts (and sometimes even small amounts) of fructose into triglycerides and VLDL.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20622544

In fact, athletes burn fructose every bit as well as glucose:

I just shared this link in another thread, but since it's relevant I'll drop it here too.

With glucose you get an insulin-secretion, which inhibits fat loss. The insulin allows the glucose to enter the muscles to be used directly as energy. With fructose, you don't get an insulin-secretion, but the fructose is converted into fat in a process called de-novo-lipogenesis.

Hey MisterE, sooo then both sound not sooo gooda.... One inhibits fat loss and one converts to fat :( What is the solution then??? :crybaby:
Unfortunately I had both taters and apples last night. It was a lonnng day :( So I mixed them, darn it! :\ Really bad idea right??? I still feel fine today though, hoping it doesn't mess any progress up... Oh well here comes another long day, or two.... But I have my apples and taters :unibrow: Lets see if I make the same mistake!! hahaha
