I did not have a non-stick pan and they did stick. I will surely broil them next time. Thanks for the tip.

My first batch was in the fridge for almost a week and I finally froze them and pull them out now separately for work lunches. I love them with sandwich thins, arugula and hummus. I had one in soup one day too, yummy!

It was fun to see the twins again without their braces this time and all grown up. I only wish my kids were raised vegan, they don't know how lucky they are.

I made the Indian burgers last night and they were GOOOOD!!! So good I had 3 LOL! No buns so no harm. ;) They did stick a little--my non-stick skillet isn't as unsticky as it used to be and probably needs to be replaced--but not much. They were SUPER good!

I still have 5 left in the fridge. I checked them this a.m. and they were SUPER firm. I'm thinking that they might be a little less crumbly (there was a little of that last night) the longer they spend in the fridge? Have you found that, Jeff?

Once I finish these off, Mexican is my next step.

These things are AWESOME!!!! :)

Glad you enjoy them. The curry burger seems to be one of the favorites and is one of ours.

Yes, they can sometimes be a little crumbly along the outside.

I recommend leaving them in a fridge uncovered for about 20 minutes. That seems to really firm them up. It gives the oats time to really act as a binder. Then, just cover any leftovers and then will stay just like that.

This is what I wanted you to try them at home before showing them off at a BBQ. Get the technique down and as you can see, the ones that sat overnight can easily be done on a open wire/grid grill. But, I wanted you to see the issues with the texture, etc

Enjoy!

Yes, I agree--I need practice! I think I'll make them a day in advance to be sure they are nice and firm. I got a new non-stick baking sheet and will try broiling them next. I almost NEVER use the oven (hence need for new pan LOL) so HOW do I broil them exactly? I.e., how far from the top of the oven should the rack be? Put on broil, pop in and remove in 2-3 min?

Thanks!

I actually wondered something--what about using regular (white/russet) potatoes instead of rice sometimes too? I assume that if the sweet tater works other taters would work too?

The closer to the heating elements in the broiler, the quicker they cook and the more you have to watch them. Usually it is the top 2 levels for the rack in the oven.

I am sure any potato would work. I have only used variations of sweet potato for their flavor.

ONE more question . . . in the DVD you show yourself toasting WW buns in the beginning and then later mention Ezekiel bread (regular non-bun bread). Is there such a thing as no-oil added buns? I've looked and have never seen any.

Food For Life (Ezekiel) has both buns and muffins that pass the guidelines and work.

Oh, great! I'll look for those.

I'll get those for everyone else and GF ones for my dad.

Hey folks...I'm a devoted McDougall'er for past 3 years while the rest of my family eat SAD - except today for lunch. I brought fixings for Mexican bean burgers and fries to my folks and they loved them!

When my dad said he was full after one 'burger' and 3 potato wedge/fries I seized the opportunity to compare the calories he just ate and feeling full to a can of Pringles (yea...baby steps needed here) and there was a ah ha moment :) Then dad asked if I'd be their cook - haha nice compliment.

Thanks Jeff for all you do for us, the info, insight, recipes etc... You've enriched my life and I'm trying to nudge my family along :)

Cheers, Denise

I tried the broiling method for the burgers and that changes the whole texture and flavor. They were amazing! I made the Mexican burgers without the corn. I sauteed some mixed veggies with arugula and poured a little cashew cream sauce on top of the veggies and put it on the burger. I think it was the best meal I had in a long time. Broiling is definitely the way to go.

HI Jeff, do you broil for about the same time as you grill them?

I made the Mexican burgers last night and broiled them. I was nervous about it (honestly, it's the first time in 2 years the oven was on LOL--I make everything stovetop or in the m-wave--and it's so easy to burn things on broil) and didn't really broil them LONG enough, but they were still AWESOME! I need to get a few spice mixes, I guess. I prefer using individual spices for most of my dishes (most of which are Indian inspired) but it would speed things up on the non-Indian dishes. But I did pretty well w/ cumin, oregano, cayenne, and garlic (in addition to the no-oil, no-salt-added salsa I found at TJ's).

YUMMY!!!! :)

Oh, and I had 2 for breakfast today LOL.
