I'm in NYC, and bought some organic sweet potatoes today. The inside is white, and I'm used to orange. Is this just a matter of variety, or should I have bought the organic yams sitting right by the sweet potatoes? I'm not real sure of the difference in yams and sweet potatoes. Is it just regional ( I'm from Georgia) or is it variety? What I bought today seemed maybe a little less flavorful. Thanks, LauraA

Sounds like you bought the Hannah variety of sweet potatoes. I tried them recently and while they were okay they were not as sweet or as tasty as the ones with orange flesh that I usually buy.

My understanding is that there are no true yams sold in the USA. All of the ones we buy in our grocery stores are sweet potatoes, even the ones that are labeled as yams.

Odds are both are sweet potatoes. You can buy true yams in the United States, but they're not common in regular markets. It's easy to tell a true yam, 'cause when you go to peel it you'll find that it's very slippery, not sticky like sweet potatoes.

Was the skin reddish in color? Could have been a Japanese sweet potato.

I just cooked some of those the other day (peeled, cubed and roasted with carrots and sliced sweet onion). Of course my girls didn't like them. They're trying to make me insane. :duh:

Thanks all, the taste was ok, just not as sweet and tasty as usual. The outside looked just like regular sweet potatoes as far as I could tell. Take care, LauraA

I work about 50 miles north of NYC and someitimes buy Japanese sweet potatoes, along with garnet and jewel sweet potatoes, at a nearby health food store. I roast them along with other potatoes, sweet or white varieties, or microwave them, and I like them a lot. The skin is usually dark brown, but sometimes is reddish purple.

If I'd known that I was trying something new and different to me, it would have been fun. I was just expecting that sweet flavor that I know and love! Take care, Laura
