Reduced one med thanks to this diet

Postby never give up » Wed May 16, 2012 7:48 am

I have had to take Gerd meds 3 times a day for years and over the last few weeks have been able to drop the mid day one thanks to this way of eating!!! (We have been working with our doctor to see how many meds we can get off of.)

Cool! :-D

We should keep a log here of how many meds people have been able to give up thanks to this WOE. I was able to go off of Mobic/Meloxicam for my arthritis. Funny how my doc never mentioned how diet could affect the pain.

Good for you never give up and danmc!

I've been off my high blood pressure meds for 3 days now! (And on this WOE for only 27 days). My reading was 109/74 this morning. I always thought exercise was the thing I was failing at, now I realize it's mostly about what you eat!
All my best, Lexus

Good going danmc and Lexus!! Exciting stuff! Glad this way of eating is working for you too!

Hubby is off 3 meds now and I did have ever increasing blood pressure and was on my way to BP meds. Now my BP is great! Just as important are the ones we would likely be taking if we hadn't changed the food we were stuffing in our mouths!

Working on my cholesterol now. I am not on meds, but it is not because my specialist didn't want me to consider it. I want to try this way of eating first.

What is your next goal?

I also stopped taking two meds that I was using for insomnia, Klonopin and Clonidine, although I can't directly attribute that to this WOE. I just decided that I didn't want to continue taking addicting drugs to help me sleep. Luckily I get some relief from melatonin and/or benadryl, although I'd rather not take the benadryl either.

Luckily, having been a vegetarian for 28 years and usually a physically active person, I haven't accumulated the typical American health problems such as heart disease, high-cholesterol, or diabetes that a 47-year-old male such as myself might see. Although I was eating an unhealthy vegetarian diet with occassional dairy, and plenty of oil every day.

So I don't particularly have any goals left, although I am anticipating being able to see my stomach muscles clearly for the first time since high school :D

Changing to this way of eating in an effort NOT to get diseases is as big a goal for us as trying to slow down/stop/reverse the ones we already have. There are a lot of diseases in both our families that we would like not to happen to us too!!

Things we are learning: When my husband was diagnosed with prediabetes we went to a dietitian to learn to eat better. We followed the advice given to the letter. We are now learning that what we were doing was just a slightly better version of the SAD. We may have been eating better than most of the people around us, but it still wasn't healthful. No wonder his numbers didn't change.

We've learned now that you can be a vegetarian and still eat a vegetarian version of the SAD that won't necessarily make you much (if at all) healthier. So much to learn, but we are moving in the right direction hopefully.

Not taking drugs, if there might be an alternative that may be safer, seems like a good idea providing that it is well thought out. Pros and cons researched.

Doctors like Dr Oz scare me. He has got a "natural" supplement for everything. He rarely, if ever, tells his followers that the things he recommends, can and do, have side effects. Or that they can interact with the drugs you are taking for other reasons, etc. Many of us believe that because it is "natural" that it is healthier.
Well arsenic is a naturally occuring element, but that doesn't mean it is ok to injest. Sorry, had to get that out. He is really bugging me.

As of yesterday Hubby is off 3 meds now!!! Yippee

danmc hope you get those highschool abs! I am shooting for my highschool weight.

As of this past Thursday, I was told to discontinue taking Simvastatin (Zocor). My total cholesterol total is down to 116 (Triglycerides: 103, HDL: 36, LDL: 59, Ratio: 3.2). I'm sorry that I don't have my last reading from several months ago handy to show how much it has dropped.

I started this WOE one month ago tomorrow (4/23), have smashed through the weight loss plateau that I have been on since February, and now this! :D

One more piece of great news, as of this past Thursday, my nephrologist at Hopkins told me that the glomerulonephritis I have suffered from since 2005/2006 is in remission!

Now, I can't say that a month of McDougalling has accomplished this alone, but I'm positive it has contributed! (My wife and I have been transitioning into vegetarians [and now vegans!] since sometime last year.)

Now if I can get off the Lisinopril, I will be ecstatic!
Thanks,
Scott

That is wonderful news scott73!!

I have high hopes to get the numbers you have for cholesterol too.

My husband got off Lisinopril with this WOE and I bet you will too!
Keep up the good work!

Thank you, never give up, and congrats to both you and your husband on all of the progress. Keep up the team work. I know I wouldn't be seeing this success without the support of my wife who is completely on-board.
Thanks,
Scott
