Is it my imagination or does Bill Clinton look healthier and younger since he started following Dr Esselstyn's diet advice? This a picture from today's paper.

I think he looks good too.

And let's face it. Former President Clinton is probably the highest profile person with diagnosed heart disease who is currently following a low-fat whole foods plant based diet.

If Clinton lives a long and vigorous life, it could have an impact on people.

If only we could blame Former Vice President Dick Cheney's repeated heart problems on a low-carb diet or the paleo diet. Instead, with Cheney it was probably just the standard American diet combined with, in the aftermath of his heart attacks, typical American Heart Association pleas for "moderation."

If only Hillary would get onboard with his WOE. Wouldn't that be a powerful message.

It might happen, she's outnumbered by Bill and Chelsea.

I saw Bill Clinton on "Ellen" this week. He looks better than ever. I am amazed at his transformation.

It just goes to show that actions (plant based eating) speak louder than words.

How great is that! I have a strong feeling Dr. McDougall's open letter helped him make the transition. Hopefully he listened to the electure it was very educational about the medical system. Absolutely shaming the way he was treated.

Aloha, patty

I do wish our former president was better about verbalizing how and what these changes have helped. For someone that is very eloquent about a lot of subjects, diet and nutrition leave him a bit befuddled. Perhaps with time he will get the message down better. As of now, I cringe when he speaks on the topic.

It could be because he is still traumatized. I forget the exact expression Dr. McDougall shared. I think the nurses call it pump head. And he has to transcend that experience to be a "God (of his understanding) conspiracy" to rationalize the Why me? to Why not me? Because some questions can only be answered by God of our understanding. He is doing his greatest service to humanity now by just showing up:) Good for his daughter.

Here is the video of him on Ellen warning that "carbs convert to sugar in the body and the main thing is to keep the sugar levels down."

Really? That is the main thing?

I think he is spending too much time with one of Hillary's doctors, Mark Hyman author of The Blood Sugar Solution.

I realize that he also said a plant-based diet is a good thing to do and its healthier etc but I too hope that in time he will become an even better spokesperson for a plant-based diet and not cause fear/confusion about carbohydrates. IMO if he wanted to warn people about vegans getting into trouble he could have said something about oil which is worse for your heart than processed carbs.

For her sake absolutely, but think of this - she is like in Yemen, trying to explain that the delicacy on her plate is something she can't eat. Plus, all these nice folks she has to talk with would be so concerned about where she is getting her protein

I think Hillary looks terrible and has for the past several years. Her face is puffy and she looks perpetually tired (the way I used to look). She does not want to be Secretary of State any more. It must be very difficult to have such a challenging job and not be feeling healthy. Hope she gets a different doctor!!

Yes, I sort of cringed too when he said that "carbs convert to sugar" thing.

However, I don't mind that he doesn't speak eloquently about his plant based diet. I think that if he tried to do the hard sell, it would backfire. I also like that he just goes on with his life, and that he eats plants without making it his main focus. That may show others that one can adopt a plant based diet and it doesn't have to consume their lives.

All I have to do is look at how he looks now, compared to how he looked before, and realize that he changed his appearance just by eating whole plant food. Wow. :)

Patty, I'd never heard that term "pump head" before but it gave me creepy chills  So I googled it and those chills were right on!

http://heartdisease.about.com/cs/bypasssurgery/a/pumphead.htm
Quote:
...In the Duke study, 261 patients having bypass surgery were tested for their cognitive capacity (i.e. mental ability) at four different times: before surgery, six weeks, six months, and five years after bypass surgery. Patients were deemed to have significant impairment if they had a 20% decrease in test scores.

This study had three major findings

Cognitive impairment does indeed occur after bypass surgery. This study should move the existence of this phenomenon from the realm of locker room speculation to the realm of fact.
The incidence of cognitive impairment was greater than most doctors would have predicted. In this study, 42% of patients had at least a 20% drop in test scores after surgery.
The impairment was not temporary, as many doctors have claimed (or at least hoped).
The decrease in cognitive capacity persisted for 5 years.
The mental impairment was not due to the patients' age (which averaged 61). The results from the Duke study were compared to results from a similar study among patients of the same age who did not have bypass surgery. The decline in mental capacity in those who had bypass surgery was 2 -3 times higher over five years than in patients who did not have surgery...

I was already grateful for discovering how to eat to avoid this but now even more so!!!

Dr. McDougall has mentioned the term "pump head" several times in talks at the ASW. It is a creepy thought but given most people think they are trading the risk for saving their life it always seemed worth the risk. Dr. McDougall has shared with us the true story that bypass, angioplasty, and other interventional steps have on mortality so it now takes on a different light. Some day this will all be just a footnote of medical curiosity. Hopefully sooner than later.

I have no idea what Hillary eats, but I have heard that Chelsea is a vegetarian or at least eats a mostly plant-based diet.
