Perhaps you should notify the local media. You might get a nice write up and help spread the word.

I seriously doubt I can catch their attention! But if given the chance, I will stump for taters and rice!

Well I went on a wild goose chase last night looking for a USA Today paper. I was just going to go up the street to the store to get it, but hubby was with me and said he wanted to go to the mall---not the closest one, but the one way across town. He was looking for a science kit for our grandson. We drove 20 miles to the mall. We stopped at Barnes & Noble to see if they had a USA Today, but they were sold out. So we headed home. Hubby took the wrong turn on the freeway and we ended up on another freeway. It wasn't even that dark. In fact I was pointing out the beautiful full moon to him when he took the wrong turn. My bad! Anyway, after going way out of our way we finally got on the right road and stopped at a gas station where he located a USA Today. Got home, read it, no McDougall article! Hubby said that at our age, that would be considered a "date night."

p.s. I did buy a very nice vegetarian cookbook at Barnes & Noble though, so the evening wasn't a total loss.

Oh I wanted to add that in the "Health" section of USA Today (where I had expected The Starch Solution to be mentioned, there was a half-page article about a new book called Why Calories Count by Marion Nestle who has written a several books on nutrition. I was very disappointed to see that she mentioned low carb, high fat diets, including the Atkin's diet as a successful weight loss strategy, especially since in other books she encouraged people to eat more plant foods.

Maybe it's better to have the book featured closer to the release date. I would find it irritating if I tried to buy a book on Amazon that I was interested in only to see that it would be a month before I could have it.

Gramma Jackie, your post about your "date night" was hilarious!

I too am looking forward to the USA Today article.

Here is the part of the article related to the book:

The Starch Solution by John McDougall with Mary McDougall (Rodale Books, $26.99)

The program encourages people to solve health problems, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and arthritis, using diets based on rice, corn and potatoes. John McDougall is a physician who helps people overcome illnesses with diet plans.

His best advice: "Eat more starch. Avoid fats and oils. The fat you eat is the fat you wear. Appetite-satisfying bread, rice, corn, potatoes and beans should replace fattening oils, cheeses and pork chops."

The biggest mistake dieters make: "Believing the fault is their own. They must stop believing there is something psychologically wrong with them."

"Dieting has focused on two approaches: portion control, which means being hungry, and severely restricting carbohydrates, which makes people too sick to eat. Neither approach can be sustained. Instead, learn the traditional diets of people. Corn kept the Mayans and Aztecs trim and healthy, potatoes once fueled the mighty Incas, and rice is still the staple of most trim hard working Asians. Learn from these examples."

One thing he wishes everyone knew about weight loss: Starches are known as "comfort foods" for one good reason: they are the right foods for people. Our natural cravings are correct. People love beans, potatoes, rice, corn, and sweet potatoes. In order to eat chicken or beef (think boiled) you must cover up their natural unpleasant tastes with salt, sugar, and spice in the forms of barbecue, steak, and sweet and sour sauces.

It's great to see The Starch Solution on USA Today!

Here's one thing I found frustrating. Mark Hyman's book comes right before Dr McDougall's book. It's no wonder people are confused.

From Mark Hyman

The biggest mistake dieters make: "Eating low-fat foods..."

From Dr McDougall

His best advice: "...Avoid fats and oils.

I like Dr McDougall's advice better.

Well, in respect to usable information, Dr McD certainly won the article--his paragraphs are the only ones that actually make sense, contain information, and aren't just cheery hype.

You don't think that Mark Hyman's advice: "Eat protein for breakfast such as eggs, nut butters, protein shake" is good?

I'm disappointed that he left bacon, beer and bons bons out of the list :)

Congratulations!
I agree that positioning Hyman and McD's books next to each other shows why there is so much confusion. But I thought the description of McD's book was very clear. Even the the other books had some points, like thinking in terms of lifestyle change that is sustainable, instead of grabbing at a quick fix. Hopefully this coverage will open some people's eyes to this lifestyle.
