It is worth reading the whole article.
Quote:
The Heart Attack Grill in Las Vegas would appear to have lived up to its reputation for the second time in as many months: On Saturday, a woman collapsed at the restaurant known for gleefully serving up artery-clogging entrees.

Owner Jon Basso said Monday that he wishes the customer a swift and full recovery. But, he added, the woman got exactly what she asked for: a brush with death.

"We attract an avant-garde clientele -- thrill seekers, risk takers," he told the Los Angeles Times, adding that his restaurant is a "bad for you but fun" restaurant that "attracts people who don't really take good care of their health."

I'm all for free enterprise and allowing adults to make their own lifestyle choices, but I think PCRM has this right.
Quote:
After the first incident, the AP reports, the Washington, D.C.-based Officials for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine said they sent a letter to the Heart Attack Grill's owner, asking him to "declare moral bankruptcy" and close the restaurant.

I already thought the establishment was tasteless (pun there :-)) but the menu really takes it a step further. Disgusting.

You know, to tell you the truth, I kinda like that they put the heart attack angle out there.

I think I've heard this very same food marketed elsewhere as "Paula's Home Cooking". Ha! (Link to the bacon, egg and donut burger, just in case you've never seen it before:)

Yup. They were pretty clear about it. People make their own decisions. Heck, cigarettes are still legal. There are now VERY scary warnings on them, but plenty of people read the warnings and go on and smoke a pack a day anyway. One of my co-workers is sick ALL. THE. TIME. It never seems to occur to her that it just might be the cigarettes--despite the warnings on the packages, society's general turn away from ciggies, stories in the news, etc. I've stopped worrying about it--it's her funeral and honestly, she brought it all on herself.

Ditto these folks.

People laugh when they are nervous. We are Spiritual Beings having a human experience where there is no get out of jail free card. The skill is realization we all have been taken hostage by social herd mentality, where we have sanctuaries that are allowed to cut, numb and drug us to be sent home to die a debilitating disease.

Maybe the elephant in the room is us.

Ultimately it all comes down to us as individuals and our free will choices.

This is BS. They are not attracting thrill seekers. They are attracting very sick people who are looking to feed their addiction.

maybe, but it would be nice if the pertinent information was clear, readily and easily abailable... and I submit that it is not.

I just can't agree. While there is disagreement re: the particulars, it is pretty commonly known that being fat and eating fat raises your risk for disease. Who doesn't know THAT??? And the place CALLS itself "Heart Attack Grill." Honestly, anyone who goes there anyway is a great candidate for the Darwin Awards, so let them go!

Some might call that cruel, but it is accurate. Trouble is, you can really make the same point about the Cheesecake Factory, which does not emphasize the danger of their high-calorie, high-fat menu.

Or Outback's "Bloomin Onion", Cinnabons, or Big Gulps and on and on...

Personal responsibility is the only solution, but it is remarkably rare, as our increasingly high obesity and diabetes rates show.

ETeSelle: Thanks for your BP thread. Very helpful. Looks like caffeine elimination might be key for me, too.

95% of hospitals visits are about lifestyle changes. Are they turned away? No they are sucked into a system that feeds their lifestyle habits of never enough. Pointing the finger at the people who patronize Heart Attack Grill is just pointing the finger at the part of us that has to get sick and tired of being sick and tired.

Aloha, patty

clarifying... agreeing more information is pertinent to lifestyle changes.

I agree that the public needs more clarifying information regarding nutrition. However, the Heart Attack Grill is among the few institutions playing it straight with the public these days. If you go to Chili's or Applebee's, you won't be warned that the top sirloin or the baby back ribs could increase your risk of having a heart attack. I give the Heart Attack Grill and "A" for honesty.

I don't give them an A for honesty. They are making a joke for the sake of marketing. That so many paying customers willingly ignore the warning shows that far too many people do not understand the risks. Their thinking must be, "After all, it can't be THAT bad, can it?"
