Hi Jeff,
Do you know any resources, other than what Dr. McDougall offers, that might speak specifically to treating cancer with nutrition?
I have a friend with a tumor that hasn't responded to over 3 yrs worth of chemo and radiation.
Thanks,
Gwen

Thanks

Jeff, the chart in the summary shows that milk consumption likely lowers the risk of certain cancers. Do you know of any credible research that confirms Campbells claim that casein increases the risk of cancer?

Thanks,

max

It is an over 500 page report so not sure what chart you are referring to however, do not confuse an association from a study or two with the conclusions from over 7000 studies.

If you read their conclusions, you will not see a recommendation for dairy.

I was referring to the chart on p. 8-9 in the summary:
http://www.dietandcancerreport.org/canc ... nglish.pdf

I don't doubt that dairy isn't beneficial to your health but I couldn't find any other source than Campbell that makes specific claims about the effect of casein on cancer growth. I'd really like to know if you have any other source.

It all needs to be put in perspective and to look to find patterns and trends. And, even then, it still needs to be put in perspective.

What you are seeing is an overview chart an a suggested decreased risk for one cancer out of 18 for one food, yet cheese, a similar food, shows an increased risk for that same cancer. I would say its not worth much.

What I look for are cancers or risk factors that show up multiple times with strong evidence. For most all animal foods, that means a positive association with an increased risk.

Look for the cancers or the factor that has multiple strong associations (good or bad) and put your efforts there.

To be honest, I am not much interested in the effect of an isolated nutrient (casein) of a food (dairy) on one aspect of health (cancer) that I do not consider healthy to begin with. That is nutritionsim and reductionism and I don't recommend taking that perspective.

Dairy products are not healthy not because of casein but because they are high in calorie density , low in nutrient density, very high in saturated fat, cholesterol, and protein and void of fiber and lacking in many important nutrients.

Thanks for your remarks Jeff, I understand perfectly well what you are saying and as I said I have not doubt about the detrimental effect of milk consumption on ones health (I don't consume any milk or milk products and don't miss them). But you still didn't address my question directly. May I conclude that you don't know of another source for this specific claim? Nothing wrong with that but if you have any I'd really like to know.

Thanks again.

I know the answer but you are missing my point and asking me to fuel something I am not wanting to fuel. :)

What is the value of knowing more of something that is being taken and used out of context and perspective?

The National Library of Medicine is freely available to all of us. Let me know what you find and how you would put it in context and perspective.

Now what?

See the problem with reductionism?

If it is a bad approach, it is a bad approach from all angles.

Jeff, I don't want to fuel anything. The reason I'm asking is that I recently gave a copy of the China Study to my sister who is a cardiologist in Germany. She told me that it was the first time she had heard of a potential connection of cancer and casein and asked me if I had read more about it. Well I didn't and had almost forgotten her question until I saw the referenced chart. I asked you only because you often have this kind of information at your fingertips.
