I am looking to pre-order this book for myself and a few other people. I'm wondering, though, if Dr. M goes over both (or either?) of his plans in this book (regular & MWL)? Or is this book merely the science behind "the starch solution"?

The reason I ask is, I already have his other two books, but for the people I want to buy this for, they do not (or may not) already have them.

Thanks!

Readers new to the forum might like to know that Dr. McDougall has written about eight books, not even counting all the cookbooks.

I'm aware that he has many books. I'm referring to "The McDougall Plan" and "Maximum Weight Loss". Any idea if these two plans are covered in this book? Or should I skip buying for people who may not have read these two books, yet?

Yes he does go over both plans in that he explains The McDougall Plan and then says what foods are and are not allowed. He then says to lose weight people should not eat foods made of flour and avoid high fat vegetables which he lists. However there is much more in the book including a lot of references to research supporting his views. The book was written for those totally unfamiliar with The McDougall Program, for those who are familiar with the program, but want a better understanding of the reasons behind it and for those who need some facts in order to explain the program thoroughly to others. It not only gives the science behind a plant based diet, but facts that specifically support a starch-based diet. I also have The McDougall Program: 12 days to Dynamic Health and the Maximum Weight Loss book, but in my personal opinion, The Starch Solution is worth buying.

Perfect! So, this new book can stand alone for people unfamiliar with Dr. McDougall. That, esentially, is what I needed to know.

Thanks!

Does the book have any info on recommended food products? I'm specifically looking for beverages like tea.

If not, is there anywhere on the site with recommendations?

As in his other books, Dr. McDougall has a list of foods you should or should not eat. He has always recommended herbal teas and he does in his book The Starch Solution also, because of the caffiene in other teas. He also recommends coffee substitutes for those who like coffee flavored beverages.
