Hello all, I've just been reading today about Mary's Mini in the newsletter and am starting tomorrow with brown rice. I have cooked up a pot and I plan on having some with one banana or apple for breakfast, I've made ahead a salad for lunch with 50% rice, carrot, zucchini, with a little soy sauce and apple cider vinegar, and for dinner I'll have rice cooked with canned tomatoes on a large bed of raw kale. I will probably have similar meals everyday although a larger amount of veggies in my dinner meal, like cauliflower and broccoli to reduce the caloric density. I'm looking to lose weight faster than I have been.

Has anyone else done Mary's Mini with brown rice?

Does anybody have any helpful advice or hints that might help me do this?

A brown rice MM is my favorite. You can see pictures and calorie counts of a typical MM for me on my journal page:

Although the picture of the salad has disappeared...?

Remember that one of the keys to a successful MM is lack of variety. Whatever three meals you pick need to remain the same for the entire week. No switching things up or changing the vegetables. Boredom with food is necessary to discourage overeating.

I did Mary's mini with sweet potatoes begining April 2008. The best advice I can give anyone doing Mary's mini is that you just have to take it one day at a time, and sometimes even one hour at a time. I love sweet potatoes. But when it was meal time and I thought to myself, oh, good, what's for lunch" and then realized it was sweet potatoes AGAIN it was quite tempting to head for something else and binge.

But, I did not cheat, and I lost 30 pounds.

But I did it one day at a time. I did not set a time period or a goal weight. I just tried to stay in the moment.

Thanks Katydid, your journal was very interesting to read. Thanks for emphasising the monotony factor: I thought it was just a matter of using the same starch for every meal. So I will be eating the same meals every day! I have discovered that I enjoy a bowl of plain brown rice, which I hadn't realised until yesterday. That means I can eat my fill of veggies before rice for my dinner meal.

Vanilla Orchid, I understand, I also am not setting any goals. It's too much pressure. I would love to do a sweet potato Mini but rice is just so much cheaper which is certainly a deciding factor.

Hmm - looks like I'll have loads of Mary's Mini's rice recipes to pick from & will get to see how your experience goes too.

Rice is for sure cheaper but I have found a local source for .99 cent/lb sweet potatoes. Seriously, I loaded up 2 whole grocery bags of them, as I am doing about 5 a day. The clerk asked me what I was going to do with them - I just looked at him all funny and said - "Ah, I plan to eat them!" then I told him "I am on a starch diet" -- then he knew for sure that I have to be a nut case.

Really, that is a deal here for sweet potatoes - I tried three other stores and the next lowest is $1.99. Then again because I am gluten intolerant rice is a problem too - I can get it gluten certified, but only in small expensive bags - no bulk for me sadly.

Anyway - I am sure you'll do well, as I seem to be loosing every other day so far and lost my first two pounds in just 2 days. Yay & best of luck :-D
