I have heard a lot about this product and saw something about it on The Today Show also. It is peanut butter that has been made into a powder. You mix it with water to make creamy peanut butter before using. It only has 45 calories per 2 Tbs. compared to about 190-200 calories for 2 Tbs. of regular peanut butter. I love peanut butter but it is so high fat and calories that I don't eat it anymore. Has anyone tried PB-2? Here is an ad for it on amazon.com. they also make a low calorie, low fat chocolate mix. It says it is all natural.

check the ingredients...it contains both sugar and salt. If they made a sugar/salt free version, i'd consider it, but I honestly don't think it is worth the money. There are many healthier foods out there, and for many people, foods like these are triggers to eat more fattening foods. But, for occasional use, if it was only peanuts, i think i'd consider it.

I was browsing the reviews of this and came across this info:

"Guys: I just tried this other product from southerngracefarms and searched under peanut flour product (basically peanut butter with the oils removed as well) that's also very good. It's MUCH cheaper than the PB2 product....I ordered three 2 lb bags and the total price with shipping was approx. $33 (therefore about $5.50/lb). The package comes in about a week after you order and it's vacuum sealed just like the PB2 pouch. And they also sell larger quantities at slightly steeper discount with little change in shipping. It is just as tasty as PB2 (maybe even a little bit more peanut-ty). The only difference is that this does not have any salt and sugar added like the PB2 product (it's just pure peanut flour) so you may want to add a little salt (maybe even a little honey) to the mixture to suit your taste. So if you find yourself snacking on peanut butter every day to satisfy your peanut butter cravings, go ahead and try this."

Thanks. I will check that out.

It's not sold on Amazon. If you Google: "southern grace farms" it will show you their website.

The nutrition label says 1g sugars in 2 Tbsp (12g). Sodium is listed at 94g. http://bellplantation.com/nutrition

I've never tried the PB2, but I've tried Trader Joe's peanut flour, which also has 1g sugars in 2 Tbsp, but 0 sodium. The ingredients: roasted peanuts. Someone will have to explain the sugar thing to me. Why are they the same if one has added sugar and one doesn't? :?

I recommended this TJ stuff for my mother, who can really put away the peanut butter  , and she liked it okay. I guess I just prefer to eat smaller amounts of real peanut butter less often. (Guess that means I'm not a peanut butter addict. ) Most of my package of TJ defatted peanut flour has gone into baking.

Gramma Jackie, I think the TJ stuff might be quite a bit cheaper than the PB2, but there's also a rumor it's being discontinued.

Do you think the TJ's product could be used as a McDougall-appropriate flavoring in a recipe, say an African or Thai dish in which the peanut flavor is an important component?

I read that too. I will check however, as there is a TJ's close to me.

The Southern Grace Farms website says that their product is the same as Trader Joe's, just repackaged.

It depends on the recipe. Peanut flour will also thicken stuff, so if you don't want that to happen, you wouldn't want to use the peanut flour or not use too much anyway.

http://www.seriouseats.com/2011/02/what ... cipes.html

There's a link to a source (Byrd Mill) for more peanut flours in the comments of that entry, if anyone's interested. They have both lighter and darker flavored flours for $5/lb. The darker roasted flours have stronger peanut flavor. TJ's is probably medium light. Its peanut flavor might get lost in some recipes, but eating it as a peanut butter sub you'll keep more of the peanut flavor. It (the peanut ghost) doesn't linger in your mouth a long time after you eat it like reg peanut butter does though, maybe because there's no/less fat?

I had to mix up a spoon of it and eat it to refresh my memory. Needs salt.

Thanks for the info and the link. Since it is so processed, I would not consider it a "food" per se, but I might try it to flavor an occasional special dish, such as an African Chickpea and Yam stew I used to make. A little thickening would be fine in this recipe. :)

I was given some of the peanut flour stuff that does not contain sugar or salt. Sadly, I found that it caused digestive distress for both myself and DH so I passed it along to a friend. (I haven't heard from her if she does okay with it.)

I used the defatted peanut butter "Better'n Butter" from Tj's and available at some health food stores. My birthday cake this year was iced with it, it was fantastic! Its still a little fatty. Basically peanut flour and brown rice syrup. Its definitely McDougall Made Irresistible legit. I wouldn't use it as a daily item, but a few times a month its ok. I worry that peanut flour could pass through the gut and into the blood stream and create peanut allergies, where as eating the nut you don't get those microscopic particles.

I tried that PB2 in some recipes - a salad dressing and some cookies. It really didn't add the peanut butter flavour, as far as we were concerned. A little bit of real peanut butter was far more effective in the dressing. I didn't try it in anything else and wouldn't recommend it.
