I can't imagine such a thing as a fat-free whole-grain tortilla. It would just fall apart wouldn't it.

I wish you all nothing but the best with McDougalling in the UK. I imagine it can be as tough as it is here, maybe even harder. I did find that London has more and more little salad places nowadays, but even there, most people seem to believe piles of boiled egg and ham on a salad are healthy. Same thing over here of course.

The last time I was in London a few years ago I was visiting an older relative and her friends, all of whom thought my diet was crazy. They kept quoting a BBC show that said vegan diets were the worst of all diets. Granted I did explain that a whole foods plant based diet is not the same as a vegan diet, but no matter. I remember one night out where my relative and her two friends were wondering how I could live on salad and potatoes (cause that was the only choice) as they all professed their love of fish and chips and large chunks of roast. Very sadly, two of them are now deceased from heart ailments, and one is in a hospital permanently debilitated from a stroke.

It made me extremely sad to watch them go like that knowing that there was an alternative. It makes me feel like I should have been able to do something about it, but I've learned that's just not possible with most people.

I spent a summer at Oxford "whilst" in law school in the '80s and loved it. I also traveled a little in Scotland. This was pre-McDougall, but I was vegetarian and found the BEST "whole meal bakeries" in Scotland, and it seemed pretty easy to get vegetarian food, although I was not paying much attention then to whether it contained oil.

Please get your UK group together. It would be great if Dr. McDougall would go there, but if not, that should not stop us from getting a group together to visit. I've been wanting to do a canal trip with a few friends where we could rent one of those little boats and travel from village to village, see the countryside, buy local produce, and cook our own meals as we went. It would be such fun to have other McDougallers to visit as well.

What a cool idea, Vanilla Orchid! We would love to see England (not next year, though due to Olympics!). It would be so fun to get a Mcdougall group together and meet other Mcdougallers! :D

Hello,
I'm in the U.K. too and would love to meet up with McDougallers
from here or abroad. On a previous thread I wrote how wonderful it would be if Dr McDougal or Jeff could come to the U.K. I suggested the Hay festival, where there are plenty of events and lectures around food and health. I will try to follow this through.

Best Wishes to you all from S Wales

YES!!!! My husband and I did visit York the last time we went to the UK, and loved it.

I checked out the webisite and I'm curious about this passage:

"Please note that we require a refundable £250.00 deposit from single sex parties and also for those parties comprising of people 25 years and under (of either sex). Payable in CASH on arrival."

Maybe you could enlighten me: I can certainly understand charging a deposit for the boat, but I cannot imagine why the owners would waive the charge when renting to a mixed gender group as opposed to only men or only women.

Anyway, I'll be in the UK next week--July 23-30, but it's just a quick trip to Oxford and London and pretty well booked up--it's a group thing meeting up with a bunch of lawyers and getting continuing education credits for attending some lectures, and doing some other fun stuff like seeing a play, and having dinner with some barristers at one of the Inns of Court. Wish I could stay longer and see more of the country.

I have talked to a few McDougallers in CA about wanting to take a canal trip through England, and I'm pretty sure I could organize nice group . . .

Hi Vanilla Orchid

I suspect the deposit for the same sex groups is because in England people have Stag and Hen weekends/holidays prior to marriage and this involves alot of alcohol and partying (same thing for the under 25s). I can't imagine them wanting a deposit if several elderly widows turned up, or middle aged gents wanting to fish.

OK, my husband, our friend, Lena, and I will be in England in May and we plan to do a canal trip. This is the first time for all of us, and we were hoping to get a small boat and an easy route. I just checked the site that Sue suggested and all of those boats are 50 feet long. When I did a search for what might be available during the time period we will be there, I go no results. That might be a computer problem, though. I'll make some phone calls during the week.

Any words of wisdom would be welcome.

Vanilla Orchid, I checked the site. All the holidays start on a Saturday and if you search for a trip starting on any other day of the week you will get no results.

We would love to meet you!

We will be in England May 16-27, and then my husband will go home, I will go to Romania and I'm not sure what Lena will be doing yet. We have no set agenda except that we do want to take a canal trip, and we don't want to drive a car, so we will be using public transit.

We would be thrilled to meet other McDougllers. You can either PM me or e-mail me at oceancrone@yahoo.com.

Claire

It would be good to have some local support.

I'd love to meet up with others over here - I'm in London but travel north to visit family
