Hey Jeff--

I was looking over the CR Society's webpage and found this:
Quote:
•Non-animal proteins can be balanced by combining different food families
One can get extremely detailed in finding "complementary" foods, but in general, combining legumes (beans) with grains will yield a balanced protein, and rice protein can complement the proteins in vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, or spinach.

http://www.crsociety.org/resources/getting_started

??? I thought that whole protein combining thing went out 20 years ago! What up? Is this a group you recommend or is there a better one?

Thanks!

I'm interested in this too, since Dr. McD has said in the past that potatoes provide a complete protein, whereas grain alone, or beans alone, don't. Does that mean that if we only use grains or beans as our source of starch, that we'd better add another starch source as well to avoid incomplete protein intake? Or do the vegs balance out the protein, making it complete?

Thanks,
Maer

I know, and I agree! I was just surprised to see this on a modern CR website. What I'm asking, I guess, is if you recommend the CR Society or if there is another you recommend--seeing the above made me question whether this one is reputable. Thanks!

I am not sure who wrote that and/or why it was up there but that information if clearly not correct.

CR, like anything, has many people practicing it and many opinions of how it should be done. No one person speaks for CR and even some of the researchers, disagree on how best to practice it. However, there are two main principles that everyone agrees on that are the most important, CR and ON. CR, means a purposefully reduction in calories, within safe limits (though even this is debated regularly on how one interprets and applies this). And, Optimal Nutrition, which is to ensure at least the RDA/DRI of all your nutrients.

if you are looking for an organization that gets all the information right 100% of the time, you will never find it. As you may know, even Dr McD and I disagree on a few points.

OK. Yeah, I know no one's perfect. ;) I just wanted to know if the CR Society was generally OK or generally suspect--sounds like the former. Thanks!

Personally, I find the CR research fascinating and compelling and this is why we had one of their lead researchers come and speak at an ASW in 9/2009.

Also, as I have written here before, by following the MWL and the principles of calorie density, one can follow the principles of CR without having to go hungry or starve.

In my opinion, the CR discussions are some of the best there is but if you are looking for a group of supporters of the 100% plant based, whole foods diet, you won't find it there.

Thanks--yeah, I know it's not necessarily plant based. I just figured there were probably a number of different groups and was trying to figure out if that was a good one. :) I appreciate your help!
