I'm feeling pretty good that it is my birthday and after lots of struggling to figure out how to handle it food/drink wise, I realized that if I accept my self and choices, that's all that matters...I don't have to eat and drink the way other people expect or want me to.

So...I didn't eat the lobster, had veggie sushi which was a nice treat, exercised, and did make a McDougall carrot cake (not MWL but wheat free, organic, and delicious! as a special day treat). Everyone loved the cake, and I stayed comfortably within my zone for healthful eating. I know deciding to have the cake will slow or eliminate my weight loss this week, but that is okay...moderation, and nice not to be white-knuckling the day.

Although I have an uncertain feeling when I imagine being on the McDougall plan for the rest of my life, I can stay on plan for today. So like AA, it's a day at a time.

I also did a very exciting thing: I called the cruise line I have a vacation planned with early summer. I was thinking of maybe cancelling it and doing something else that didn't have such a focus on food, but guess what?? They accommodate vegan diets!!!! I made arrangements for that and I am sure it will enable me to do what I've always said mattered...focus on the people, the environment, the moments---not the food. Great food is good but it (for me) should not be the main focus at the expense of all the other goodies in life.

Just wanted to share this with those of you who are kind and supportive! :-)

Congratulations on your good choices. I've been at this for 2 months now and can't believe how easy it has been to give up meat and dairy. It will get easier. AnneC

Birthday congrats and lots of pats! It sounds like you are learning that YOU control your food, not the other way around. We don't all learn that lesson so quickly! I am really glad you found a way to have fun celebrating your birthday without having to sabotage your long-term goals. Win-win! (Doncha just love happy endings? )

Hey, that is so great how you adapted and made some logical adjustments for your special day. Happy birthday and many pats on the back. (So much better then those birthday spanks)!

You have to share which cruise line does vegan. A group of my long-time friends love to do the cruises together- I thought I'd have to stop with this diet, maybe not!
