Hi All,

I could really use some advice for my sister. Actually, what I really need is a good link or article supporting a plant based diet and children's health. My nephew is sick, again! My 6 year old nephew is sick with asthma, brochitis and allergies. No surprise that they go through a lot of milk, dairy and meat product.

Recently my sister informed me that at the last Dr's visit he highly recommeded that my nephew get his tonsils and adnoids removed! I have dropped suptle hints for a long time about the benefits of a plant based diet and I know my sister would think I was totally nuts if I told her that by trasistioning her boys to a plant based diet may help him avoid surgery. I am totally wrong in this thinking or am I right. If I am right I could really use a good study to help support my arguement. I just would feel responsible if my nephew had surgery that could have been prevented if I didn't try just one more time. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks,
Kris

Give her a copy of the China Study...if she will read it...My daughter in law is the same way..she was brought up on dairy..and gives milk and cheese to the grandkids...I have no say in the matter..I offer suggestions. but they go in one ear and out the other..thankfully my grandkids are not sick to often....it is hard , like they say.."you can lead the horse to the water...but you can't make them drink"

I would not push plant based, yet but instead find links about dairy and breathing issues. It would be an easier step in the right direction and may really help the little boy.

just get out with it and tell her to do her own research. You can say "I have been following Dr. McDougall and I want you to spend a few minutes reading these links (insert links), I feel like this is the answer and don't want to see him get worse and not have shared what I have found. I'm not going to judge you if you go some other way, I just want to share what I know is working for many people with that problem."

I would buy a copy of the book Whitewash for her. There is an entire chapter devoted to dairy and children's health.

Also tell her to do her own research regarding removing the adenoids and tonsils. There are potentially serious complications and the benefits are questionable.

Here are Dr. McDougall's newsletter articles about dairy.
http://www.drmcdougall.com/med_hot_calcium.html

The November 2006 article is specifically about dairy and children. I like his articles because he always references the scientific research from which his conclusions are drawn. Also, these bibliographies at the end of each article provide further research for anyone who might be inclined to dig deeper for themselves.

Good luck. I've tried to talk to my sister about her kids' severe asthma before and she just says that if dairy were the problem her doctor would have told her that...but, it's worth a try.

I sincerely hope this helps!
Peace

you said : " I have dropped suptle hints for a long time about the benefits of a plant based diet and I know my sister would think I was totally nuts if I told her that by trasistioning her boys to a plant based diet may help him
avoid surgery. "

so what? what do you care if she thinks you are nuts? i think you owe it to your nephew to speak up and try to educate your sister. In the years to come, how will you feel if you keep quiet and the kid gets some other diet related disorder?
If you try to help now, in the the future you can say to yourself "well at least I TRIED to help back in 2012"....even if nothing comes of your trying. you have got to try is my opinion.

I just watched a FRONTLINE program on the "medicated child" and was shocked to learn that in the last few years there has been a 4000% increase in little kids being diagnosed as bi-polar. They showed some of the familes and kids at home and what they were eating--corndogs, goldfish crackers & other CRAP food. no wonder kids are having so many problems! the parents are feeding them horrible stuff!

Thank you all for the tips, links, and leads to information. What I really wanted was some solid information and studies to present to her instead of "Have you thought of trying..."

I knew this great bunch of people would help give me some direction. I will look into all the suggestions.

Kris

There's a good book by Robert Cohen called Milk A to Z and it looks just like a children's book. It goes through all the diseases and discomforts from A to Z and how dairy causes them.

Forks Over Knives seem to convince lots of people pretty quickly, or at least get her interested in the reading. It won't be like homework, just a nice movie. Take care, LauraA
