I always go to the ASW with the intention to report back with as many details as possible, so you'll always see me notebook and camera in hand!

Just posted my notes from the debate. Writing fast, I did my best to catch everything though I'm sure there is an item or two I missed. Here, from my notebook to you:

I'll be reporting in on more of the sessions as the days unfold. This was a definite first stop!

Thank you! I respect both of these men so much and this clarifies a few points for me. I find myself mixing the two diets together, vegan with more greens and a small amount of nuts or seeds in my salad dressing per Dr. F but more starches like Dr. M.

I hope this helps stop some of the bashing that goes on with both sides. Both of these men are doing important work and have more things in common then not.

Thank you for posting this. Very interesting.

I'm new here and I'm curious to know has McDougal ever debated Michael Eades? If so, does anyone have a link?

Hi Lani

I posted this in the ASW thread but in case you didn't see it I found an error regarding beans. Dr F stated that he "didn't recommend much more than a cup a day either." And then John Mackey said something about being in agreement to limit the beans.

As a side note, I was surprised how off Dr F was regarding the protein % of calories in beans. I would have thought that he would have it memorized correctly. Maybe he mixed it up with nuts.

*sigh* So maybe I missed reading this somewhere along the way from Dr. McDougall,

Quote:
McDougall: Vitamin D we get from sunshine. You may increase risk of fracture by taking large doses of Vitamin D, which also raises LDL cholesterol.

Has anyone read or heard numbers regarding how much you LDL can raise? This continues to frustrate me, as I am not in completely in agreement with my doctor when it comes to my Vitamin D supplement I was prescribed. Do the benefits I have experienced since changing to this lifestyle outweigh being on a Vitamin D supplement?

I have a blood test scheduled for the end of March, which will including screening my Vitamin D level (which was 23 when I got my test in December, 2011).

It is not just LDL cholesterol and increase risk in fractures to be concerned about, he also talked about the increase risk of pancreatic and esophageal cancer. Do a search and read through the various newsletters on Vit D and the articles jeff has linked to. 23 is not low and is within normal range.

Take a look here:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21640757

Quote:
A PubMed search identified 22 cross-sectional studies where serum levels of 25(OH)D and lipids were related and that included a minimum of 500 subjects, and 10 placebo-controlled double-blind intervention studies with vitamin D where more than 50 subjects were included. In all the cross-sectional studies serum 25(OH)D was positively associated with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) resulting in a favourable low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (or total cholesterol) to HDL-C ratio.

BUT

On the other hand, the intervention studies gave divergent results, with some showing a positive and some a negative effect of vitamin D supplementation. However, none of the intervention studies were specifically designed for evaluating the relation between vitamin D and lipids, none had hyperlipemia as an inclusion criterion, and none were sufficiently powered. In only one study was a significant effect seen with an 8% (0.28 mmol/L) increase in serum LDL-C and a 16% (0.22 mmol/L) decrease in serum TG in those given vitamin D as compared to the placebo group. Accordingly, the effect of vitamin D supplementation on serum lipids is at present uncertain.

...one should wait for the results of forthcoming vitamin D intervention studies before drawing conclusions on potential beneficial effects of vitamin D.
