There was no way these folks were going to lose fat on this trip. It was, in my view, a type 2 diabetes epidemic in-the-making.

In fending for myself, I focused mainly on the salads and the black beans mixed with a little rice. As you regular readers know, I don’t “do” breads, potatoes, pasta, desserts or fruit drinks. I think they are unhealthy. Go figure. I have to say, it sure got old after a day or two.

wow this guy sure missed out! LOL

The trick is... how to present information regarding a healthy diet to people following a low carb diet in a manner which they can accept?

so, his in-laws paid his way - and that of his wife and kids, too? isn't that amazing? they must be so concerned about his health! what a lucky guy!

(wondering who the 62 yo triathlete woman was he mentioned in the article. and dismissed as looking unfit - too young to be our favorite Dr Ruth)

it's unfortunate - he was given the opportunity to experience the costa rica intensive, and just didn't get it!

All I can say is that guy  ..what a missed opportunity

I am trying to get my Hubby to go on one of these Vacations with me...I think it would help him to become more "McDougallized" :unibrow: than he is..without expectations....He has refused to even discuss the 10 day program  so..maybe next year we will be joining the trip(I Hope) it sounds like great fun, great food, and great company

This man does not know what he is talking about,

he says:-

"Of those who had already been on the McDougall program for years, I had the following general observation: they don’t look too healthy. People who subsist on grains and simple carbs at the expense of quality protein for any length of time tend to lose muscle mass, regardless of their exercise regimen. They are what we call “skinny fat“. Essentially, they have no lean tissue and yet they have surprisingly high body fat levels, despite their loose “skin and bones” appearance. Lean body mass is a major defining criterion of good health; and these folks were sorely lacking. Excess carbohydrate turns to fat pretty easily, but you can neither build nor preserve muscle with it."

I have been eating like this for 16 months, I had a body composition analysis done at the beginning of last week and was told I was 'thin muscular', with very little fat.

There's some workouts he promotes I like, mostly body weight stuff, I include as part of a broader regimin that's based on cardio which he actually preaches against. He likes to say things like "skinny fat" and "chronic cardio"! Even more telling is when you read some of the lit "better to look fit than be fit" is the theme. Confusing short term body image and apperance of fitness with health IMO. It also seems to be a little bit of an unfair description of the event. I have never been to one of the events, but I would presume a major reason people go is they havent been eating like this for years and they want to learn how in a nice place. Anyway, go to the site, logic and science isn't paramount!

I've been McDougalling since the mid-90's. I lift weights. I walk. I do yoga. I look quite fine, thank you. More importantly, I am very healthy.

I don't pay much attention to what others flap their yaps about. I do what works for me.

I just spent a little time on his website after reading the post he wrote about the McDougall trip. His income seems to depend on his ability to peddle protein drinks, and promoting a regime centred around a seriously intense fitness regiment, so he was ALWAYS going to bad mouth the McDougall approach, which needs a fraction of the protein necessary and requires nothing more strenuous than a good brisk walk 4 times a week.

Yes, he does have an impressive physique but what with all that running, strength training and protein shake drinking he really has to work for it doesnt he?! And all that excessive protein he is putting away every day means he is storing all kinds of problems for later on in life.

He kind of reminds me of the trainers I see in the gym. They all have impressive physiques but they are all eating way too much protein and fat. Scrambled eggs seems to be the favorite of many. They do look great but the truth is they are ALWAYS exercising, thus continually working off that excess fat.

The truth is that most of the overweight in society would just be happy to be proportional to one's height, enjoy immunity from degenerative disease, and be off the diet roller coaster that causes so much misery. I bet this fella couldnt believe his eyes when he saw how healthy and trim people were who had been stuffing themselves with so much food on the McDougall programme for years! The truth is you can achieve those aims I mentioned just now, simply by eating as much as you want of the right foods and going for a walk not even every day - a message it is not in his interest to promote!

You read more than I did Jack...suckered into reading that Costa Rica wrap up and did nothing but laugh at the synopsis. Ah well, to each their own.
