I still have weight to lose. I really am lax in getting any workout in. Walking is my main way of exercising. Now, should I concentrate on losing weight, the fat first? Or do both lose weight then do body sculpting?

Id love to be firm and not jiggley.

thanks.

Both is a good idea. I keep hearing that it helps the look and tightens the skin some too. I haven't been doing near enough of that type of exercise been mainly doing cardio things.

Not only is it good for toning, but it helps protect your bones as well. I love how weight training makes me feel so much stronger. Then, once you lose your weight you'll already have nicely shapes arms and legs.

I lost weight more easily when I lifted weights than when I was just walking. Muscle does use more calories per hour, even if you don't burn as much in the session.

I did both. As I was loosing weight with MWL I started a strength training class at my YMCA and continued walking pretty much daily. Weights were pretty low when I first started but I built up the longer I stayed with it. Even though I hadn't lost much weight yet I was ecstatic the day one of my class mates complimented me on how much leaner I looked. It was the boost I needed to stay with both the class and MWL.

Now 2 years later I still go to strength class three days a week and walk at least 5 days a week. Three days a week it is on the treadmill, the other two outdoors in my neighbor.

After I got the weight off I find I can eat the regular McDougall plan and not gain an ounce by sticking with my exercise. I don't think I could if I stopped exercising. And I feel marvy! ;-)

If you are fortunate enough to have a Y in your community give it a try. Ours is so great!

I do have some weight books, Joyce Vedral and I have an exercise tape that uses cords for resistance. I just cant get motivated to use those dang things.

I also bought a jump rope, after seeing on Dr. Oz how easy it looked. Well, let me tell ya something gals. Its not easy. I cant even do that. How pathetic is that? Can you jump rope?

Guess Im going to just have to force myself to do something.

Thanks for the encouragement.

I can't do the jump rope yet either hurts way to much to jump like that. I've been getting my hand weight out and my stretch bands every since I read your first message. Made me think how much I needed to get that in too.

The cords are good to start with while you are getting the form down properly. I just like to encourage woman, don't be afraid to increase the weight lifted, as long as you have proper form. Us natural gals will not get muscle bound.

As for the jump rope - I totally understand. I often wonder what happened to the little girl inside me. I use to be able to jump rope and not miss, Ha I'm a total clutz and can't go for long. Then I tried a hula hoop at Walmart one day. I can't do that either. I had the neighborhood record. What happened to me? I can still ride a bike, but not as good as I use to.

Ah faith, as we age we are no longer as nimble. I use to be able to hula hoop too. Shoot, if I tried that now, Id die laughing at myself and the hoop would not hula. Use to jump rope too as a child, all the time never missed either.

I will try with the cords tomorrow. I have Richard Simmons for that. He always tires me out. And makes me inmobile the next day.

Yes, yes, yes to strength training. Do it now -- it will help in all sorts of ways as previous posts have mentioned. A book I have given away to tons of folks is called "Strong Women Stay Young" has great ideas on how to get started with weight training at home using things like soup cans for weights. Tons of resources on-line now, too. Check out Lani's page, too -- she has great ideas on how to get started.

As for the jumping rope -- a friend of mine was teaching her girls to jump rope and she told me that now it felt to her like all of her insides were jiggling around when she jumped rope -- so, I tried it and by golly, she was right! Funny how things change. I used to be pretty good at cartwheels too, but when I tried to do one a few years ago, I couldn't even remember how to start. Maybe that should be my spring resolution, once the grass greens up and gets soft - give the neighbors something to talk about. :D

I just hope you have no hills in case you fall and start rolling or something. I will have to try a cartwheel this summer. I did do one but it was 10 yrs ago. Hmmm do I still have my stuff.

My backyard is pretty flat, so I should be okay!!! But, hey, take a video of your cartwheels -- would love to see them! : )

Thanks for the reading Lani.

I actually just got done with my workout. And my muscles are still hollerin at me. It was hard to keep up, but at least I did it. The best I could.

I did Richard Simmons Sweat and Tone tape with the cords.
