Dr McDougall in one of his video says humans should not eat nuts, as proof nuts have a hard shell that is difficult to remove (considering we didn't have nut machines thousands of years ago), it would be difficult and time consuming to eat nuts.

But, then I want to ask how did humans harvest wheat or rice or barley if tools and time factor is a consideration? It takes considerable time and tools to harvest wheat/rice/barley etc...

Also, another separate question really, is would you ever see a human look at a wheat field and say "oh, that looks delicious" ? Or a rice field for that matter?

Nuts are permitted on the regular McDougall plan, but not on the Maximum Weight Loss plan, because they are very calorie dense. You can read more about Dr McDougall's thinking on nuts in this article from a 2009 newsletter:

No Population Has Lived on a Nut-based Diet

To Live on Fat Would Mean Population Extinction

The two paragraphs is where Dr McDougall stumps me. No one is talking in the context of either nut based diet or living on fat.

I get the impression the article is a response to arguments made for the heavy use of nuts in other diets.

I highly recommend Jeff Novick's new video Nuts and Health: What the Science Really Says. Completely changed my attitude on nuts.
