Is there a barbecue sauce that does not have HFCS, sugar or artificial sweetener in it that I can buy at the store? Or an easy recipe.

I have taken the sugar/artificial sweeteners out of my diet & really miss barbecue sauce on my potatoes. I spent 10 min at the store yesterday reading labels, not one of them & there were a lot of them, had one that didn't have the above stuff in it.

I use Trader Joes which uses regular sugar rather than HFCS. If you don't want sugar either, I think you'll probably have to make your own. I think that you could tinker with any BBQ sauce recipe that appeals to you by substituting whatever type of sweetener you prefer to use.

I have some Daddy Sam's http://www.daddysams.com/home.asp that doesn't have HFCS. It uses sugar and brown sugar. I think I got it at Walmart.

Thanks Serenity,

Yeah, the thing is, I dont want any sweetener in it. I was kind of afraid that I wouldn't be able to find one that I could buy. Maybe I will look up a recipe for it, I can control & use as little sugar as possible.

It all depends on how much sugar/brown sugar, but I like that it does not have the HFCS. I use the HFCS free ketchup, I think it says 4 grams of sugar a serving, it does not seem to bother me although I dont use it that much so if that one was low like that it might be okay. Now that I have these sugar cravings under control, I am really leery about using anything that has sugar. I will check it out at Wal Mart tomorrow, it seems like I have seen that brand before. I looked thru probably 15 brands at Winco yesterday, pretty sure I didn't see that one. Or I can order it online if I can't find it.

Thanks.

I'd email Chef AJ. I bet she'd have a recipe for a date sweetened BBQ sauce.

Oh, good idea, Kate.

I will do that.

Thanks so much for the suggestion.

Just as an aside, remember that the grams of sugar is for both the naturally occurring sugar in the tomato as well as the added sugar. So, the added sugar is something less than 4 grams. Jeff talks about that in regard to label reading. I agree with him that it's worthless information until they start listing out the added sugar separate from the naturally occurring sugar.

Good luck in your search. I was going to suggest date sugar too, but I wasn't sure what your parameters were. AJ can definitely help.

Hi,

I thnk Chef AJ might have a good idea, too. In addition, here are two recipes you could look at
http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/2009/09/ch ... -tofu.html

Susan's chipotle barbeque sauce is truly awesome, and you don't have to use it to bake tofu. It only has on tbs of sweetener, and you can choose the sweetener. But it does use ketchup, so if you need to avoid that, here is a recipe for ketcup that looks really good and uses apple juice for sweetener. This is from Cathy Fisher's blog, straighupfood. She works with the McDougalls and her recipes are great. Not all MWL, but very concentrated on no flours, sugar, gluten or salt. She's a great resource.
