If you find yourself having to eat out at places like this more than very occasionally, keep a well-sealed bottle of balsamic vinegar in your car. Then you always have safe dressing! :)

Thanks for the tip about Wendy's. Traveling is a problem for us. We take food but then ending up sharing with others and run out. I had not thought about going to Wendy's. We were at a Craft Festival this weekend and were looking for something we could eat in the food vendor area. One vendor had a sandwich listed as "the triple bypass" and they even listed ingredients. Triple bypass was about right.

Awesome post!

Just to clarify, that meal cost less than $3?

$3.02 after twenty four cents in local taxes. :-D

You guys are lucky to have those low prices!

I asked my wife to stop by and pick up some taters and a salad and it cost over $9 for one side, garden salad and three potatoes. :( Looks like I won't be using them unless it's an emergency. I ended up using that Italian dressing, which was quite good, but it was such a tiny salad that I was left wanting more.

We must have different dressings here in Canada, because the one I got was fat free.

Fat Free Italian Vinaigrette Dressing
Water, sugar, white wine vinegar, white vinegar, modified corn starch, garlic, salt, garlic (dehydrated), mustard seed, onion (dehydrated), bell pepper (dehydrated), spices, oleoresin rosemary, xanthan gum.

You know I thought it was a tiny salad till I dumped it out on one of my big plates it's not as small as it looks in that little container.

I have high expectations when it came to the salad. When I make salad for myself, it often includes a whole head of lettuce (or two) and several pounds of veggies :D

Perhaps my disappointment comes from the fact that I always compare prices, sometimes to the extreme - like when I see a potato selling for $2, I think "geeze, my 10lb bag cost $1.99!". But that's my problem, not the foods :P

I think the baked potatoes and the side salad are both $1 at my Wendy's, so I can eat for $2-3 depending on whether I get one potato or two.

Yes, I believe in the US there is a $0.99 menu, but not in Canada - the "value deals" here are $1.89 and include burgers and shakes. We ordered off the side menu and it was expensive :(

We stopped eating out regularly long before we started eating this way for the exact reason you mentioned. I love spaghetti but I could make an entire box at home plus homemade sauce and a fabulous salad to feed my whole family for what one meal cost in a restaurant.

This would actually be the second "eat out" meal that I've had in over a year, the last was for my 10th anniversary, so I'm certainly not complaining about spending all my money in these places. I just feel like Wendy's could have been a great option if my wife or myself is out (especially with the kids) and needed to eat somewhere. I'll usually stay hungry until I get home, but I know that they'll go out and buy $5 organic cookies or $6 hummus with $5 of bread... I was hoping this would be a great alternative to that, but not if it's going to cost that much. Of course, Wendy's could always bring the $0.99 menu to Canada and all the worlds problems would be solved. :)
