Hello,
I'm new to the McDougall forum and this is my first post. I am vegan, and have been following the Dr Fuhrman nutritarian approach for about 8 months now, but have started to encounter some difficulties with Dr F's specific recommendations and I'm beginning to think it would be a good idea to go for a sort of Fuhrman-McDougall-Esselstyn-Campbell-Novick, etc. synthesis. Does anybody know if there is such a thing as a comparative table or a single discussion somewhere systematically outlining the areas of overlap and divergence between these diets? I can see that there are some great discussions comparing one or the other of these diets in this focum which I will certainly plough through, but it would be great if there was one central place where I could get an overview of several/all of them at once. (If it doesn't exist, it would be great if it did!)
Thanks,
Healthseeker

I don't know of any such table, though it might exist. There are others on here who have been doing this much longer than I have, and they can probably give better guidance there.

But I did want to say hello and welcome.

Welcome aboard, Healthseeker! I am unaware of any type of synthesis that has been published.

I suggest that you thoroughly educate yourself with the great resources here. Then you may decide, as many of us here have, that McDougalling (without any added hyphens)is ample! :!: Ha ha!

Best wishes! :-D

Many thanks for all your welcomes and your comments. I'll certainly plough through as much of this info here as I can, there's obviously a lot of great stuff on this site.

HS,

This does not include Fuhrman - but has a one page description of a few "diets."

I suppose you could put together your own chart - please consider sharing if you do.

Another thing to consider is that these programs have much more in common than are different. So, the time and energy in putting something like that together may not be worthwhile. Here is a video of Jeff Novick's response regarding the different recommendations.

Thanks for all this. I'm thinking about putting together a table comparing the different diets - if I get around to doing it, I will be sure to post it :)

I've been thinking about a video I saw on YouTube a few years ago with Drs. Fuhrman and McDougall sitting on a panel and getting a beat heated about the differences between their plans. My take-away, particularly after reading books from both of them, is that while Dr. McDougall is most definitely more "starch-based," and Dr. Fuhrman is more "nutritarian"/green vegetable and fruit based....there is a fair amount of overlap between these plans. A lot of it has to do with whose counsel/personality/approach you value more. Case in point: Furhman's plan requires a certain level of "starch" to get you to sufficient calories, and McDougall's plan leaves room for vegetables and fruit, and even a bit of higher fat nuts/avocados, etc., if you are active and no longer trying to lose weight. Here's the video I'm referring to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdxVfi632Xw
