 Post subject: Intermittent Fasting - IF anyone that does it on McDougalls?

Hello
Im really into getting lean and strong. There are alot of people getting these results by applying different methods. Im a really fan of the Intermittent Fasting approach wich is you fast for 16 hours and you eat the rest of the 8 hours. Usually 2-3 meals or whatever you are happy about in that feeding window. People are doing this with very good results. I also want to use this approach while doing the McDougall program but as i know of nobody has done that while on a no meat super high protein program.
So would be cool to discuss and also if anyone have tried it, please share :D

A couple of years ago I actually did IMF for an entire year. Usually 2 times a week. The intermittent and understanding what you are doing were key players in my success.

Lani, thanks for posting about your experience. It sounds very interesting, although the price of his book is a bit high for my budget. I've played around with fasting before but always felt they had to be at least a couple days long. I really like the idea of mini fasts.

I couldn't find a 6 month (or longer) report on your experience. Did you ever write that up?

Don't we all fast for several hours every night while we sleep? Isn't that why it's called breakFAST? :)

Lani,

It's not clear to me that you were McDougalling at the time. I'm intrigued - but just not sure why it's necessary to fast if one is completely following the McDougall principles.

I've read some info on the CRON folks and fasting. And it kind of makes sense in that case - if you are trying to get below the set point for the calories you are eating.

Any scientific info on IMF???

Chile, nope, didn't write up a 6 month or longer report.

A click on the 'fasting' catgegory on my blog brings up relevant articles, yet it sounds like you may have done that. Brad was a guest on my Teleclass series on 2 occasions which were very interesting events. He got his start in the supplement industry and then rebelled and went rogue with exposing the myths of supplements, protein powders, and...well, you can imagine! He also wrote a book on this which I refer to in Is The Protein Pedestal on Tilt?

Along with the version of ESE that I got, there is a whole section of audios called the science files where Brad refers to research to support his work.
I was vegetarian at the time though not McDougalling per se. Once I switched out to ditching dairy and oils, I stopped doing the fasting because, frankly, it's more fun to eat! I enjoyed the fasting process for reasons mentioned in my blog, and think it can be great healthy practice and may well jump into it again at some time.

Thanx. But would be great in terms of the Intermittent fasting as for 16+ hours fasting everyday and also with the McDougall program. Results are based then on fat loss, muscle gains, energy and everything.

Did you see this. There is a free book you can download. You just have to register. I read the book and it gives simple straightforward advice on transitioning into a fast.

Dan,

IF seems to come up often in the CRON reading I've been doing. It seems to me that if one were closely following the McDougall principles it would not be necessary.

However it seems like a good strategy for those times when I overeat - or eat off plan - or just need to trim an extra pound or two.

I'm also considering some IF just because psychologically I think "skip a meal" why would I ever do that. Hard to explain - but it seems like it would be good to not be so attached to regular set meal times - and know that it might be ok and possibly better to skip occasionally.

I wonder if you could say more about how it fits in with McDougalling for you - I hope my first comment is not interpreted as an accusation - I'd just like a different perspective.

IF is never necessary, and only useful in the context in which you'd like to implement it. Some people do CRON just fine with multiple meals, though I personally hate it. IF isn't cron-specific, either. I've used IF to gain muscle and I've used IF to trim fat. It's not CRON in and of itself, but it does generally reduce body fat compared to three meals eating as far as I have seen.
I like fasting. I get huge creative boosts and have great energy. My best workouts have been fasted. It's just part of my life and I've been doing it for the last 4 years. I see no reason to change. Ever.
These days. I'm trying to train and diet through a pretty severe injury, so I'm trying to cut a little. It's hard juggling between calories for injury recovery and calories for weight loss.
But no matter what my goals are, I'm always IF'ing.

Like I said, I've practiced IF for ~ 4 years. My body has changed a lot during this time, depending on whether im into cycling, weights, kettlebells, whatever.
But I'm always lean and strong, and it's always easy to maintain an average calorie intake that maintains or causes weight loss.
The only change I've noticed switching to mcdougall while I IF is more hunger in the mornings and I tire more easily. If it doesn't go away I'll cut it out, but I enjoy not having acne quite a bit.
