Mahalo Debbie for spotlighting the highlights of Dr. McDougall's program. I lost almost all my excess weight with Dr. Fuhrman's program... and your post makes transitioning back to Dr. McDougall's clearer. It has been many years in between since being introduced to Dr. McDougall's plan. The difference for myself, between them is the 1 oz of seeds, and nuts... minus 2 fruits and a increase in starch:) I find the increase in starch eliminates the craving for bread and of course a lot less shopping, prep and storing. A great thread to share!!!

Aloha patty

Hi
Im a bit confused. Is tofu high fat? Some of the recipes mentioned in your link use tofu. Is this allowed on MWL? Also is rye flour allowed or are all types of flour prohibited? What about flaxseeds? Many thanks

But it *is* a processed food, so not allowed to eat as an entree, but the recipes shown that do use it are salad dressings, and all you would eat of it is the equivalent of a tablespoon or less per serving. He does talk about tofu in the book a number of times and mentions it's not allowed until after you reach a healthy weight and off the MWLP and on the regular program.

Quote:
Ground flax seeds are okay I believe.

All nuts and seeds are prohibited on MWLP but are fine for the regular plan, according to the book. Of course, Dr. McD may have changed his stance since then, like he did with corn tortillas.

Quote:
All flours are eliminated.

And remember, the inclusion of couscous as being allowed on MWLP was an editing mistake, Dr. McD had said on the forum soon after the book was published, because it's a form of pasta, and not a whole grain.

Quote:
Ground corn is allowed because it really isnt turned into a fine flour such as wheat or rye, but rather a course meal.

In the Setpoint article he says it would be hard to over-eat them, which is why they were offered at the MWLP weekends. He forgets about people like the volume eaters here who could easily cut up 6 or more corn tortillas, bake them into chips, and finish off the whole plate by themselves with salsa or hummus. If it was just because of the size of the grit, then Ezekial products would be allowed, and they aren't:

You know they are, Chewy. You've been asking that question on the forums since the MWLP book was released! LOL It's Jeff who discourages their use because of caloric density, but they're perfectly fine with Dr. McDougall.

also this is to Debbie..but I don't know how else to reply and yes I am confused. i jumped on the bandwagon a couple months ago when my pc got hacked and before I read completely the rules of MWL. Ok so I reposted everything and have now read everything I think..and have started today. That is why you got 2 weigh ins. On my own this year to the chagrin of my heart Dr.'s I went off animal products and then 3 months ago I went off fish oil..even though they threatenned me with a high risk of heart attack. I got sick from the medication they wanted me on but sicker from reading the side affects ; ( In one year my cholesterol went from 297 down to 200. I am 4'11 and weigh 118 and couldn't lose more weigh so then I found out about Dr McDougal and now am willing to try to give this a shot and also I like that Jeff Novick's thinking is like mine as I was also into raw foodism etc etc I am a certified Iridiologist, have studied nutrition etc any whoo that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Nice to be here ; D

OK, the initial post that began this thread has been pulled. I am replacing the guidelines and as many of the links to information on the Maximum Weight Loss program that I can. First, the guidelines, borrowed from KirstyKay's journal--a nice compilation of passages from Dr. McDougall's MWL book:

Maximum Weight Loss for Maximum Health
Program outlined in the MWL book, page 60.

2. Eliminate All Oils
3. Eliminate All High Fat Plant Foods: Nuts, Nut Butters, Seeds, Seed Butters, Avocados, Coconut, & Olives.
4. Eliminate All Flour Products
5. Eat Whole Grains and Potatoes
6. Eat Legumes
7. Make Green & Yellow Vegetables One-Half to One-Third of your meal
8. Eat Uncooked Foods
9. Restrict Fresh Fruit to No More Than Two Servings a Day, and Avoid Dried Fruit, Fruit Puree, and Fruit Juice
10. Use Simple Sugar Sparingly

Exercise you can live with. MWL book, page 106-107
