I am NEVER satisfied! I can eat until near vomiting and still want more. Sigh. I think I may have some hormone thingy a little out of whack or something. I just do not seem to get the signal, whatever it is. So I pretty much measure everything, make X amount and stop when I have eaten that no matter what. And no snacks either. Last summer I got into "snacking when hungry", just fruit, and my A1c went from 5.1 to 6 in about 4 or 5 months! Yikes...

Measure??!! Wow, you are good (and controlled). Measuring reminds me of the old Weight Watchers days, and while I was mostly successful, I was always starving. I HATE measuring! And I don't particularly like being that hungry where I feel like passing out.

My sibling eats this way, too, and she's very thin. Me, not so much. Once I asked her if she'd like something to eat and her response was, "no thanks--I just ate breakfast 4 hours ago". That about sums it up, I guess.

More like desperate times calling for desperate measures. I hate to feel like I am going to get abdominal stretch marks from my last meal. I really can not tell when to stop eating except via stretch receptors or portion control. So.... sad but true.

Ok, let's get serious for a minute.

Do you measure mostly grains, or all food? And if just grains, can you give me an idea how much you allow yourself? And, also, if you are satisfied enough to walk away and not be starving still.

Thanks!

For real, seriously, I am never satisfied.

I almost never eat grains anymore. Eat one piece of fruit w/ meals only. Zero snacking. Very rare grain intake, as a "cheat".

Typical meal for me is today's breakfast [total around 600 calories]:

1/2 a large mango (other 1/2 for wife) followed by
one pot "stew":
Quote:
4 cups tightly packed mixed, chopped, leafy greens (Chinese broccoli, kale, bokchoy, red cabbage)
3/4 cup cooked beans
1 tsp ground flax
a mix of spices for flavor

In pressure cooker for about 90 sec or a bit less at pressure, fast release, then:

mix in 1 oz mixed raw/unsalted nuts seeds (today, walnuts, pumpkin seed, sunflower seed)

If I measure the amounts, at least approximately, I can stop eating/run out of food, just short of "feeling" pressure in abdomen.

I've been trying to reduce my starch/grain ratio to veggies. After reading what you eat, it hits home even more. The beans will help with the fullness factor, but I still need potato or rice. However, I need to drastically reduce the bean/potato/rice portions and increase the veggie portions.

I have a VitaMix, but I don't do veggie/green smoothies. I have always preferred to chew my veggies. For whatever reason, soups don't fill me up either and I'm afraid a smoothie would be similar. And....I'm a bit afraid of green smoothies and that the taste will be...ikky. Probably not true at all, but I hesitate nonetheless. Due to my weight, I shouldn't be doing any nuts or seeds. The broccoli/basil pesto I made last night did have raw cashews though. :(

Starting tomorrow, I'm making a concerted effort to increase all veggies and decrease all starches/grains.

Thanks allot for sharing!

Beans are a great filler upper!!! In some ways, much superior to grains for weight loss as they have so much "resistant fiber" that their calorie count in your body is considerably lower than what is reported in tables based on lab work w/ calorimeter.

I am eating the nuts because for awhile I only had the one Tbs flax and lost too much weight to a bony 105 lbs at 5'3" and am actually trying to gain weight at this point. Hard, daily work-outs plus a bit more calories...

I do miss grains at times, esp when wife is eating sourdough toast!!!!!!!! but mostly do not really miss them anymore. Took quite a few months for that though.

Smoothie tips: Do NOT use juice at all, only barely enough water to make it blend and the rest whole produce. That way maximize fiber for more filling. The other big key for me is to eat w/ a spoon so I don't just chug it down. Huge difference in psychological enjoyment. Also, for the taste, if you put a little fruit in w/ veg, or better for me, beet root or carrot, they are much sweeter and actually can taste good... w/ beet or carrot added I can "drink" quite a bit of kale etc; cold soup on a hot day

So even though Dr. D says to consume 50% or more of starches/grains, you find that amount too much then? Do you eat potatoes? Gosh, I find eating more starches/grains helps fill me up. (it probably helps to fill me "out" too, right?)

For one whole year, after I became gluten intolerant, it was so easy to follow MWL. I did so without any slips, too. But I got bored and found myself eating the same thing every day. So then I re-introduced pasta in the form of rice pasta and then corn tortillas. I eat rice and potatoes every day, and beans on most days. Now beans....that's where I could easily exceed the 1-cup-per-day limit. Love beans! :)

Kale, being so nutrient dense, is a wonderful thing. I do notice a difference when I don't have any. I put it in all my stews and usually my rice. I even tried an Asian Kale salad that someone shared here with PB in the sauce. I served it at my Croquet League last Friday, and everybody raved about it, which surprised me. Most people don't care for kale, especially raw.

Grains make my blood sugar go sky high. One cup cooked barley w/ a a big bowl of mixed, non starchy veg puts me around 200. One cup beans, same veg, more like 150.

Not if I care how high my postprandial blood sugar goes. I do love it though. But then I love the taste of all whole grains really...

I love wild rice is this considered a grain? This is wild rice with nothing else included. I think my blood sugar goes up and down on me as well but didn't think about the grains causing it. That is except for white potatoes I never eat them at night anymore because I wake up if I do.

Wild rice is a grain (not a true rice) though a pretty nutrient rich one. I don't know for sure but possibly a bit less glycemic than brown rice
