I have a ten month old baby and I am getting ready to switch her off formula when she turns one (right now she is on earth's best organic). I would like someone to suggest alternatives to milk. I am a bit confused as to what to do! I have read pros and cons to soy milk. What else is there? What is best for her and the rest of my family? Thanks so much.

Ten months is pretty young, maybe you should continue with formula for a while. After that you can use rice milk if you want some to use some kind of milk. Children don't really have to have any kind of milk after they are eating well on other foods. I nursed my youngest until he was 2 then he didn't have milk at all. (I wasn't McDougalling with my older ones.)

I would keep using formula.

(I have breastfed all of my kids to 3+ years of age, then they just a little soy or almond milk on cereal).

I think a one year old who is not breastfeeding should continue on formula for a good while longer (just my opinion).

I don't think you're supposed to use rice milk because of the small amounts of arsenic that can be found in rice milk. Generally I've heard people say almond or hemp milk are okay though. I'm not sure when you're supposed to do the switch though.

I don't know what advice to give but when I weaned my daughter off breast milk I gave her raw goat's milk that I ordered from the health food store. She was a year old at the time and this was 16 years ago. I found a recipe somewhere and did a home made formula with the goats milk and some supplementation. I thought it was better than commercial made formula. I do think it was the best choice at the time, although she may not have needed to drink goats milk, I believed it was better for her than cow's milk.

After reading the research pointing to cow's milk as a possible cause of type 1 diabetes in children, why in the world would anyone want to give their child cow's milk? Human milk is what babies are supposed to have and when they no longer need that, there is no need for any other kind of milk.

Hi everyone, new McDougaller here. =) I have a question regarding babies and soy milk.. I have read somewhere that soy formula is not advised, and there was some information about phyto estrogens interferring with reproduction areas if they were introduced in males. I have looked at phyto estrogens and so far I do not see any dangers in it, at least according to the research that I have seen, it actually helps prevent cancers and normal estrogens to attach.

My question is, the child in question is about 12 months years old, and has stopped drinking cows milk and have substituted it with soy milk. I reccomended also to them to use rice milk and oat milk, the child enjoys soy yogurts a lot. Is the soy milk going to be be harmful for the child? I do not want to do something that is wrong and I will feel responsible if something goes wrong because of it. I don`t think there will be any complications, especially since the dairy have been eliminated.

Anyway, happy to be here and I should let you know that I have lost about 6 kilos already, and I think a few inches around the waist, doing some weight training so I`m gaining muscle mass, so weight loss wont be accurate.

Thanks again!

Ron
