Hi Pinkrose:
Thanks for the poll! I voted 5 hours. I usually spend about 30-40 minutes in the early morning before my day starts reading the Bible. I read a chapter out of Proverbs corresponding to the day of the week, and then I read through the O.T. and N.T. I always start in Genesis and Matthew on the New Year. If I get done before one year, I go through the Psalms over and over, and then just start over again in the N.T. at Matthew.

In the evening before I go to bed I read again - whatever I feel like reading. Usually I pick a Pauline Epistle. I read for about 15-20 minutes or so. I don't read on Wed. nites because we have church and get home late.

So I'm somewhere in the neighborhood of 4-5 hours a week give or take.

I picked an hour a week because that's what I was indulging in earlier this year and plan to get back to enjoying starting AC (after cold). For the past month or two, I've been praying my "Joy Songs" list on my iPhone and reading some "Joy Thoughts" based on Phil. 4:8 when I get up in the morning.

For the New Year, I want to establish a Morning Tryst and Evening Tryst (like in "Hind's Feet on High Places"). Both times will include reading through Scripture, Genesis to Revelation, pausing to reflect over verses and pray.

I kind of wonder whether my present "down" mood is due as much to not being in the Word of God daily as it is to being ill. Anyway, I'm off to see my PCP and possibly get an antibiotic -- this cold has become a sinus infection, I'm pretty sure. It would be really cool to see less of this lady. She's nice, but I have better things to do than run to the doctor every month or two.

You can see the results of the poll above! Thanks to all who voted!

Question: How do you encourage yourself and others to read the Good Book?

I think of it as food for the soul, since the soul is eternal and vastly more important than the body, I want to nourish it with the Word daily. I advise spiritual babies to read a psalm and three chapters daily. This will enable one to read the entire book yearly. I consider that a good start but certainly would not suggest it is adequate/ideal for anyone.

"1 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. 4 Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. 6 For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish." (Psalm 1, NIV)
