I end up having to bring my large tomatoes in due to birds also. One of the reasons I grow tomatoes is for the fresh on the vine taste. It is a shame when I have to pick them green so they don't get attacked.

At our house the squirrels will sometimes take big bites out of the bottom of the tomatoes. One year I started putting out pans of water and they didn't bite into as many.

I also mentioned in another post that yello or orange tomatoes don't tend to get eaten or attacked as much. Animals equate red with ripe and will usually leave the other color tomatoes alone. Golden cherry tomatoes and Mr. Stripey are two of my favorites that don't seem to get eaten very often. My husband even bought a golden raspberry and amazingly the birds haven't touched it. The raspberries are a light pinkish orange color when ripe and they are delicious!
