To answer your question.......Because when I go to the bookstore or library, books about atheism are always in the religion section. I don't particularly think atheism is a religion or "belief," but many other people, including a lot of Christians say it is. Besides, do you really want us to try to start a separate "atheism" section on this board?

I personally would like to see this entire section of the board called the "Philosophy Forum."

I come from a conservative Christian background. My husband is a minister's son and was an ordained minister himself for awhile. Most of our family are conservative Christians. However after much study, my husband and I are both now agnostic unbelievers. I am not militant about it and I don't like flaming on message boards. However it is a little of an affront to have an entire section for "religious people" (mainly Christians) and nothing for others who have strong secular philosophical leanings in one direction or another. All philosophical views in my opinion influence our lifestyles including our eating habits. For instance I am heavily involved in anthropology and the study of evolution including continuing human evolution. I am also very interested in resourse conservation and global sustainability and that has a direct bearing on how I live and what I eat. Therefore I think it only fair and appropriate that people with similar world-views have a place where we can get together and discuss such views.

That being said, I too think any flaming should cease and I apologize if I said anything that offended anyone else.

I wanted to add that I just read some comments and that if people are going to diss evolution (as I've seen in some of the posts by Christians) then all bets are off! (just kidding folks, but I am pretty strong about my convictions when it comes to creationism vs. evolution). Both my husband and I are Bible college grads and know exactly what the Bible teaches about creation. We are also grads of secular colleges. Also my son is employed by one of the leading anti-evolutionist ministers in the country. I have also read Ken Ham's literature for the past 20 years. So I know the debate well. That being said I would really hate to see this board turned into a creation vs evolution forum. I don't know why we can't just all learn to respect everyone's right to have differing viewpoints.

The original post was a spam message. Clearly defined by the spam in the signature. Lot's of anger over nothing here. Just a spammer looking for customers.

Well, let's just say that it gave me a reason to state my position clearly. :D

Nobody is going to have their mind changed by a post on this forum. It's not designed to win converts to a pro religious or pro atheist position. It was designed as a place where a number of people felt the need to pursue their McDougall goals with a religious twist. I'm not sure of the need for that but here is your place, feel free to make use of it. It is also nothing that needs to be feared by those that don't follow a religious bend. There is no conspiracy to find converts among us. No one is attacking any particular belief by this forum being here. Some have clearly felt threatened by it's presence. I can't see a reason for that either.
I am disheartened that people are ready for a fight simply by a spammer plying his trade with a post here. It speaks to the need for all to unload their weapons and take things down a notch. Nobodys beliefs (or non-beliefs) are being threatened here. If someone feels a post is out of line drop me a note and let's chat. Live and let live.
