Post subject: Can't find anything about gluten and drywall
PostPosted: Tue Mar 20, 2007 6:53 am
I've been grabbing at bits and pieces of info about drywall and the paste used for it, etc., and so far have been uable to find anywhere where the gluten might be...as far as I've been able to see, drywall is gypsum, either derived from rock or as a byproduct the coal burning industry...both are identical chemically...then it's pressed between recycled paper and allowed to harden.

The paste looks deadly even without gluten...the silica can really mess up lungs...ugh...we've inhaled snoot-fulls of that junk over our lives...but I read ingredients on several types of mud/paste and didn't see any gluten listed...
...so...anybody know where the gluten is that's supposedly somewhere in the drywalling process?????

People aren't confusing this with wallpaper paste, are they? I know wallpaper paste is nothing BUT gluten.

Yeah, all I can find is people talking about it. And you know you can't trust anonymous people telling you things on the internet ... present company excluded

I found this data base where you can look up ingredients for different products.
http://householdproducts.nlm.nih.gov/cg ... -Wallboard

I can't see any gluten there -- but lots of stuff you don't want to be breathing. A mask is probably a good idea.

I did find one person saying that their drywall joint compound had "starch" listed in the ingredients & emails to the manufacturer comfirmed it was wheat. http://www.asmatart.net/fiddletown/0503.htm

So it may depend on what stuff you use.

I think you are right about the drywall itself not containing gluten. (Unless it would be used to make the paper stick????) But you want to avoid breathing the dust no matter what it contains.

Well I'm feeling a little better about all of our upcoming drywall projects now...just having to worry about deadly lung-destroying particles, rather than actual gluten :P --

--At least now, I will read the mud/paste buckets' ingredients before we decide which ones to use...AND-- I will insist we all wear a decent mask while sanding the drywall joints.
