Hi Faith,

If I'm remembering correctly we talked briefly earlier in the year (in this gardening forum) about pink-eye purple hull peas. Mine are doing well (except for a pesky rabbit!) and I thought you might like to see them. This is the third year we've had them in the garden. The first year I had no idea what to look for and completely missed the pods -- I thought they were just branches.

Those are most interesting looking pods. For a minute there I thought I was looking at my own fence though! As I am not familiar with pink-eye purple hull peas, I have to ask..... what are they and what do you do with them?

Thank you, Letha and Plumerias, for taking a look. I'm afraid I live in a hellhole and by afternoon everything is fried.

The pink-eye purple hull peas are very much like black-eyed peas. The last couple of years we've dried our crop and saved them for Thanksgiving and/or New Year's Day (for good luck, you know!).

I have more garden photos (and some very cute kitty ones too -- we've been loving and socializing two barn kittens for the past month) on my blog: http://12813fwtx.blogspot.com/

P.S. to Letha -- I went back and found your explanations on how to post photos. They made it very easy, again!

Here's why they're called purple hull peas:

Oh those are so pretty and look just like the hulls of the country beans I am use to. You can see the individual pea though. Plumeria - hehe I'm always talking about crowder peas - they are long like that, maybe even longer, but you barely see the individual peas cause they are on top of eachother.

Very cool. Looks like they are bush variety too. I'm going to see if johnny's has some. They would be fun to put away for NY day.

I wondered if those weren't also called crowder peas! Sadly the farmers who used to sell those at our local Saturday morning market have retired and no one else grows them, or I'd have to learn how to cook these!

no those aren't but that's how they grow. Super long pods. Johnny's didn't have the seeds. I'd love to run across them somewhere.

Faith, what kind of seeds are you looking for? I'd be happy to see what I can find around here.

Oh I'm not sure if Teri in TX is going to see this. I forgot she had posted pics. I am anxiously awaiting the time to put these in. I thought they'd be regular beans I'd have to let climb, but it looks like they are just a large bush variety.

So if I decide to dry them, you just leave them out in the sun, correct?
