Nickel Allergy & Plant Based Diet

Postby robinjorgenson » Tue Feb 05, 2013 11:22 am

My family has been plant based since January 1st. During this time my son and husband had come down with terrible rashes that were unexplained and getting worse. Well it turns out they both have nickel allergies and this rash has been caused by the plant based diet and it is known that a nickel allergy diet is not in line with a plant based diet, as they cannot have:

Whole wheat bread, multi grain breads, multi grain cereals, wheat bran, wheat germ, whole wheat pasta, oats, oatmeal, buckwheat, seeds, rye, millet, Beans, lentils, peas, soy products (tofu, soy sauce, soy beans) sprouts, brussel sprouts, asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, canned vegetables, red kidney beans, chickpeas, cabbage, corn, mushrooms, onions, carrots, canned fruit cocktail, pears, bananas, canned fruits, tomatoes, raisins, rhubarb, dried fruit, tea, beer, red wine, Chocolate and cocoa powder (especially dark chocolate), All nuts (walnuts, peanuts, almonds, hazelnuts, soy nuts), All seeds (sunflower seeds, linseed)
Canned foods in general.

Things that improve the condition are taking vitamin C with meals and eating a high iron diet.

I have been so happy with our plant based diet and I am honestly feeling a little devastated right now. We've been saving money, animal life, waste and I don't have the nickel allergy and I have been feeling better than I have in years on the plant based diet. I am looking for anyone who has any information or experience with nickel allergies and plant based diet for information and/or support.

Thank you.

 Wow, I had no idea about this subject. Just reading now.

Rash of Nickel Food Allergies Linked to Healthier Diet

Dr. Zirwas tells patients to take vitamin C with every meal because it will bind to the nickel in the food and prevent absorption.

Well YOU can continue with the plant strong diet. There are people on this board who have allergies to so many things and they manage to continue with a vegan diet. Katydid and Burgess to name two. Do a forum search on them. It's not impossible.

You could email Dr. McDougall and post in Jeff N. forum and ask.

Interesting... I have a nickel allergy and I have only ever had symptoms when I try to wear jewelry or watches that contain nickel. I eat almost exclusively from that list.

Just saw this topic--

I have had a very sore mouth since April. I have been to every specialist imaginable and no one can find a reason for my sore gums and inside my lips. Sometimes it is so bad I cannot eat. This started almost exactly when I started this diet. I kept thinking it was coincidental, but maybe not.

I went to an allergist and the only thing I am allergic to is nickel! I am also gluten free.

Have you found any answers? Are you still eating on this plan? I don't really know what to do.

I do not have a nickel allergy that I know of, but I am doing an elimination diet to determine if I have food intolerance and it looks like I do (to more than one food). I am avoiding grains, nuts, seeds, soy, legumes, and all fruits.

You can still eat mainly plant based with a nickel allergy. I don't see yams or sweet potatoes on your list of "to avoid foods" so you can eat lots of those. And it looks like you can eat rice, potatoes and winter squashes so that is awesome! You might have to eat small amounts of animal products to meet your nutritional requirements. The Cron-O-meter can be very helpful in determining if you are meeting your nutritional requirements.

I have to eat small amounts of animal protein (right now it is turkey breast) to meet my protein needs and I have to eat some olive oil to stop my weight loss (I do eat one avocado a day, but that isn't enough). I don't feel badly about this....I rather be able to eat beans and nuts but I can't. So, it is what it is. At least for now.

For a tomato sauce, take this recipe and try substituting parsnips for the carrots and see what happens!

Now is the time to concentrate on what your family can eat (and that is a lot of different foods) and begin to experiment. Do the best you can and see it as an adventure!

Happy cooking!

Best,
Timaca
