Hi - first, does anyone know what happened with Ruth Heidrich who was in the Forks over Knives documentary? They said that after her breast cancer spread to her lungs and bones she saw Dr. McDougall and decided against getting chemo and radiation as treatment. She began eating a plant based diet instead. It was strange how didn't say what happened with her cancer.

I have a very good friend who has breast cancer that has spread to her brain. She has been getting whole brain radiation and chemo treatment. From what I've read, a person whose cancer has spread from one part of their body to another part typically only have a number of months to several years to live. I want to talk to her about her diet, but I'd like to learn more first. If anyone has any information you think might be useful I would really appreciate it.

Also, does anyone know if Dr. McDougall talks with people over the phone?

Thank you very much for your help -

Sorry about your friend's disease. Ruth Hiedrich did very well. Brain cancer is also very serious. Here is a link to Ruth's star McDougall page. She also has a website you might be able to google. http://drmcdougall.com/stars/star07_ruth-heidrich.html
There is a lot of alternative cancer treatments possible. Here is a link to the Hot Topics area about Breast Cancer. http://drmcdougall.com/med_hot_breastcancer.html

A new Mark Furhman book, Supper Immunity, has a chapter with recommendations on foods to eat especially for cancers. What are her doctor's telling her?

Ruth is alive and well. She has a "newish" book out from a few years ago. Someone told me she is a raw foodist now. Not sure if that's true.

I also have a friend with stage 4 cancer that is in numerous places, including her brain. :-(

Hi Steve,
I'm sorry it took me a little while to write back - I was traveling this past week -

My friend's doctor told her "your story has not been written yet," which she found encouraging.
Thank you for the links to the hot topics area and Ruth's McDougall page - and also for referring the Mark Furhman book. This was helpful information -

Atheria - that's interesting Ruth has become a raw foodist. I will look for her book - thanks.
And thank you for mentioning your friend - our friends are often our family - it's very difficult.

I'm confused do they mean Joel Fuhrman? He wrote a book on Super Immunity. :)

I think they do mean Joel Fuhrman.

Thanks Noel and Nicole for the heads up -

Steve - I received your message - don't think I can reply as I recently registered - I did watch the documentary and I'm very glad to be aware of that alternative therapy - thank you -

Yep, it was Joel Furhman. His book has a section on cancer. He suggests, onions, cuciferous veggies like cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, mushrooms and beans, among other things. Doctor McDougall is great on Cancer too. I think being low fat Vegan can prevent many of the common cancers, fingers crossed. I think Tumeric is good too, but not sure if this is in the book. Other stuff like blueberries. I think it also depends on the type of cancer, what is good against it. A local natural path suggests beets and asparagus. I guess it is all veggies against cancer, not meat or dairy. I read a lot of alternative stuff and there is a long list of what to do. Too long. There was a discussion on the board some time ago about Bursynski and some posters thought it was not good science, so I did not want to post and sent the PM instead. You can search this board for Bursynski by name to find the discussion. As I recall he did not get an endorsement by Jeff and Jim, quite to the contrary. My thought is that if the doctors tell you there is nothing that can be done or that if you do this treatment you get two more months and horrible side effects, it may be time to look for an alternative. Brain cancers in particular seem to be really tough in particluar. Cancer is serious, but if using a bit of Tumeric or garlic is helpful, why not?

Steve

This researcher at MD Anderson studies foods, herbs and spices that have anti-cancer properties.

If I recall correctly, he recommends turmeric in combination with either ginger or black pepper for greatest effect. His opinion seems to be that foods work when combined with other foods--that there's a synergistic effect that way--and that isolating compounds from foods is not as effective because pieces of the puzzle are missing.
