Heart disease seems to run in my family. Both of my parents have had heart attacks and my grandmother died of heart failure. My mom has started McDougall and I am slowly trying too reprogram her way of thinking. As a background, they all smoked and ate SAD. My mother had been told it was 50/50 for her causes lifestyle/genetics. For my own peace of mind, I had my own workup done and my numbers were great (just a veg at the time, but still). My doctor told me that since they all smoked, there's no way to know if genetics were involved because smoking causes that much of a risk. He did urge me to keep it up and applauded me for taking my health in my own hands. My mom has requested more books (I sent her the 12 Day Program for Mothers Day) and I was just wondering which would be best for this. I wish I could send her all of them, but I simply can't afford it.

OM, have you read The Starch Solution? :?: I expect she would like it!

However, if you like to find cheap books, you can find some of Dr. McDougall's other books at half.com. :!:

See

I have no financial interest in the company.

Thank you pinkrose. We have a really good bookstore here that has a lot of new and used books and I'm going to see what they have. My mom only has me for support and I want her to be well again which is why I'm doing this. Hopefully they will have something good. If I win the lottery, I'll be sending her to CA for theMcDougall program. :-)

Since heart disease is a serious concern in your family, I would recommend two books:

Dr. McDougall's book: McDougall Program for a Healthy Heart: A Life-Saving Approach to Preventing and Treating Heart Disease

Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn's book Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease

Both are very compelling, well written and basically espouse the same diet - no oil, plant based.
